HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – Behind a strong showing by graduate senior
Jackson Cole, the Arkansas Tech men's golf team finished fifth out of 10 at the annual Battle for the Belt, hosted by Henderson State University out at the Hot Springs Country Club.
FINAL RESULTS
A native of Fayetteville, Cole placed in a tie for sixth place after shooting four-under (212) for the tournament. Cole's opening round saw him shoot a two-over (74). In that round, Cole was two-under on the front-nine, but had four bogeys on the back-nine.
In the second round, which was played shortly after the end of the first round was completed on Monday, Cole fired a four-under (68) thanks to a bogey-free round. Once more, Cole had a ton of success on the front-nine and shot three-under. He made improvements on the back-nine in round two and made par on the four holes he previously bogeyed and made birdie on No. 14 to go one-under on the back-nine.
Cole's final round ended at two-under and was highlighted by four birdies and an eagle.
Tech's next finisher at the tournament was
Landon Lawson. Making his season debut, Lawson bounced back from a five-over (77) opening round with an even-par (72) in round two and a one-over (73) in the final round. His improvement over the final two rounds landed Lawson in a tie for 18
th place.
Jacob Peetoom also rebounded from a round one 77 and dropped three strokes in round two for a two-over (74) and another stroke in the final round to post a one-over (73). Peetoom would finish tied for 25
th.
One stroke off Peetoom's tournament total was senior
Shaun Jones. Jones would have a stroke total of 225 over three rounds and tied for 27
th.
Luke Hanson was the fifth golfer in the lineup for the Wonder Boys and the freshman would improve his score each round after an opening round of 77. In round two, Hanson shot a 76 and then a 74 in the final round.
Roby Cooper, who played as an individual in the event, tied for 25
th and was the top finisher among the individuals compeating with scores of 74-75-75.
As a team, the Wonder Boys shot 301 in the first round and then 290 in both the second and third rounds.
The Wonder Boys will now prepare for the Super Region Preview, which is scheduled to take place at the KickingBird Golf Club in Edmond, Oklahoma from Monday, October 16 – Tuesday, October 17.
