RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – The Arkansas Tech women's tennis team closed out their home slate with a big 4-3 win over No. 44-ranked Southeastern Oklahoma out at the Chartwells Women's Sports Complex on Thursday afternoon.
The Golden Suns (7-6, 3-1 GAC) got the pivotal match off to a great start as they breezed through doubles play, earning the first point of the match, with a 6-2 win at No. 3 doubles (
Megan Bell /
Melanie Griffiths) and a 6-1 victory at No. 2 doubles (
Aastha Dargude /
Madalena Amil). With the doubles point secured, the No. 1 match featuring
Lea Grinberg and
Daniela Baez was left unfinished and tied at three-all.
In singles action, it was the top half of the Golden Suns' lineup that carried the torch.
Lea Grinberg, the top-flight singles player, was first to finish a match as she dispatched of Southeastern's top-flight player in Vanessa Nitu, 6-1, 6-4.
The Savage Storm (16-7, 2-2 GAC) then got on the board with a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 4 singles. A 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 6 for Southeastern followed and knotted the match at two-all.
Daniela Baez swung the advantage back in favor of Tech as she won her No. 3 match, 6-1, 6-1.
Aastha Dargude then clinched the match at No. 2 singles, winning 6-4, 6-1.
As Dargude clinched the match, the final singles match played on and it was the Savage Storm who won the third set after the first two were split.
The Golden Suns will now have a quick turnaround for their final match of the regular season as they will travel to Arkadelphia to take on Henderson State. The Suns, at 3-1 in GAC play, can clinch the No. 2-seed in the upcoming GAC Tournament with a win.
