Box Score 2 WEATHERFORD, Okla. — The Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys baseball team offense exploded for 30 hits in a doubleheader sweep of Southwestern Oklahoma, capping a series sweep with 9-4 and 14-4 wins on Saturday.
With just three series remaining in the 2014-15 season going into this weekend, the Wonder Boys found themselves needing to make up some ground in their efforts to capture a berth in the upcoming Great American Conference baseball championships in Enid, Oklahoma. Thanks to the sweep, the Wonder Boys (23-17, 10-10 GAC) now find themselves just one half-game out of the tournament field and a tie for fifth place in the GAC, as both East Central and Southeastern Oklahoma have identical 10-9 records in league play.
In the opener, the Wonder Boys got a complete game performance from
Cody Jones, who scattered 11 hits over his nine innings of work, allowing four runs, three of which were earned. Jones improves to 6-2 on the season.
Meanwhile, the offense scored early and often, getting on the board first on a sacrifice fly in the first inning and then tacking on four more runs in the top of the second, as RBI singles by
Rafiel Johnson and
Kris Ayers, combined with a wild pitch and an error gave Tech a 5-0 lead.
SWOSU came back with a run in the bottom of the second, but the Wonder Boys added another in the fourth on an RBI grounder by
Mark Vaughn to extend the Tech lead to 6-1.
SWOSU cut the margin to 6-3 in the bottom of the fifth, and after both teams' bats went silent the next three innings, the Wonder Boys added three more runs in the top of the ninth. Another SWOSU error followed by a two-run homer by
Bryan Heward pushed Tech's lead to 9-3, and the Bulldogs managed just one run in the bottom of the inning to cut the final margin to 9-4.
Heward had three hits in the opener while Vaughn and
Collin O'Neil added two hits apiece.
In the finale, Johnson took the mound for the Wonder Boys and tossed five solid innings, scattering six hits and allowing two runs to pick up his first win of the season. He would be provided with plenty of run support, as Tech used an RBI double by
Caleb McKinnon, an RBI grounder and a wild pitch to claim a 3-0 lead.
The lead stretched to 8-0 in the fourth, as Heward's second homer of the day, a two-run blast pushed the Tech lead to 5-0.
Kris Ayers scampered home on a wild pitch, and RBI singles by McKinnon and
Seth Wheeler stretched the lead to 8-0.
SWOSU got on the board with a run in the bottom of the frame, but an RBI double by
Patrick Castleberry and an RBI single by
Cole Fergus gave Tech a 10-1 lead.
The Bulldogs cut it to 10-4 with a run in the fifth and two in the sixth, but Heward scored on an error in the seventh, followed by a two-run homer by Fergus and an RBI double by
John Lassiter to push the game to its final margin.
Fergus was 4-for-5, while Castleberry, Vaughn, and Heward all had three hits in the win.
The Wonder Boys return to action on Tuesday, April 14, traveling to Claremore, Okla. to face Rogers State. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
