Box Score 2 OKLAHOMA CITY — It took a couple extra days and a change of scenery, but the Arkansas Tech baseball team got back to Great American Conference action Sunday afternoon, as the offense took off in victories of 13-6 and 14-6 over East Central to sweep the weather-shortened conference series.
Cole Fergus went 5-for-8 on the day, knocking in five runs and scoring two more. The Wonder Boys (13-10, 3-5 GAC) got multi-hit days from seven other batters as well, as the team pounded out 27 hits to go along with their 27 runs, which is the most scored by Tech in a one-day conference doubleheader since joining the GAC. Fergus launched a home run as well, as did
Caleb McKinnon,
Kris Ayers,
Patrick Castleberry and
Bryan Heward.
Tech got started quickly, scoring six runs over the first three innings in the opener, but trailed the Tigers (11-7, 7-4 GAC) 2-0 after the first. A Castleberry walk to start the second got things going, and a
Keenan Jumper double put two runners in scoring position.
Collin O'Neil plated Castleberry with a sacrifice fly, and Fergus' first hit of the day was an RBI single to center to tie the game up. A Castleberry single and a three-run home run from Heward were the only hits of the third, but they pushed across four runs to give the Wonder Boys a 6-4 lead and turn around their last deficit of the day.
Single runs in the fourth and fifth by ECU tied it back up, but Tech responded with three in the top of the sixth, as Fergus, Jumper and
Connor Brady came around to score on
Mark Vaughn's single. That last bit of offense was all the Wonder Boys would need, as starter
Cody Jones recorded five straight outs in the sixth and seventh, and
Nate Rutherford,
Bryson Morris and
Ryan Vruggink combined to toss 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief. Four more hits — all singles — in the top of the ninth helped push across four insurance runs, with O'Neil and Fergus notching RBI base knocks.
As quickly as the Wonder Boys got going in the opener, they started even faster in the second game, not holding a lead for just the first four plate appearances, as Castleberry's bases-loaded walk pushed home McKinnon to give them a lead they would hold the rest of the way. O'Neil's single with two outs knocked home another, and Fergus belted a two-RBI single to left to make it 4-0 before the Tigers got to take a swing. McKinnon scored again in the second, this time on an Ayers groundout, giving enough breathing room when ECU plated three in the bottom of the frame. Tech got that and more back in the third, as an O'Neil double and a
John Lassiter sac fly each pushed one run across before McKinnon skied a two-run home run to left to make it 9-3.
Solo shots from Fergus and Ayers sandwiched an RBI groundout by McKinnon that plated Lassiter for three more runs in the fifth for the Wonder Boys, while McKinnon's fourth RBI of the game came on a single in the sixth and Castleberry launched his eighth homer of the year in the seventh for the final 14-6 margin. Starter
Trent Armstrong put up scoreless innings in the bottom of the first and third — keeping all the momentum on Tech's side after scoring four each in the top half of those frames.
Geofferey Birkemeier entered in fourth and went 3 2/3 innings in relief, scattering four hits and striking out three to keep the Tigers at bay.
McKinnon went 2-for-4 with three runs and four RBIs in the second game, in which each Tech starter had at least one hit. Jumper went 2-for-5 with two runs, O'Neil 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBIs, and Fergus 2-for-3 with three runs batted in in the nightcap. In the first game, Heward led the way with a 3-for-5 effort with three RBIs and a pair of runs. Jumper and Castleberry each scored three times, while
Marcus Wilson added two hits. Jones went 6 2/3 innings, picking up his fourth win in his third start of at least six innings, allowing just six hits and two walks.
The Wonder Boys return to action on Monday, facing Drury in Springfield, Mo. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
