DURANT, Okla. – The Arkansas Tech women's tennis team played a Great American Conference match on the road on Friday afternoon at Southeastern Oklahoma and came out on the downside of a 6-1 score.
Despite the overall final, the Golden Suns were highly-competitive in their match with the Savage Storm.
In doubles play, the Golden Suns bounced back from a 1-6 loss in flight two and won at flight one, 6-4, with the pairing of
Monica Balau and
Natalya Montoya. That put the clinching point for doubles at flight three. In that flight, the duo of
Meaghan Butler and
Melanie Griffiths narrowly fell, 7-5.
With the doubles point in hand, the Savage Storm would go on to clinch the match with singles wins at flights four, two, and three.
The remainder of the match was played out and Tech showed resilience in those final three matches on court.
At flight five, Butler bounced back from a set one defeat (1-6) to split sets with a 7-5 win in set two. In the 10-point tiebreaker, Butler narrowly lost 10-8. At flight six, Griffiths pushed her opponent beyond the regulation six games won in each set, but ultimately fell, 6-7 (5), 5-7.
The lone point for the Golden Suns came at flight one where Balau won the match, 7-6 (6), 6-4.
The Golden Suns will now prepare for their final home match of the 2025 season. That match will take place on Tuesday, April 15 against Henderson State. It will be the final home match in the career of four Golden Suns. To be honored in the Senior Day match are
Meaghan Butler,
Melanie Griffiths,
Maggie Holcomb and
Maria Krite.
