FIRST PITCH
The Arkansas Tech baseball team takes to the road this weekend for a three-game series at Southern Nazarene.
 
The series is slated to begin with a single game on Friday afternoon starting at 2 p.m. The following day will have the doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
 
The Wonder Boys and Crimson Storm have met 30 times historically in a series that dates back to 2013. In terms of the all-time series record, Tech leads 26-4.
 
The two teams met three times last season with the weekend series being played at Tech. The Wonder Boys would sweep the season series.
 
TECH(NICALLY) SPEAKING
The Wonder Boys enter their game at home against Southern Nazarene with a 19-18 overall record and a 14-9 mark in conference play. This past weekend, the Wonder Boys dropped their series at home against Henderson State, 2-1. Most-recently, Tech played a mid-week game on the road at No. 26 Harding this past Tuesday and lost 9-7.
                                                                                        
Entering play, the Wonder Boys are hitting .289 as a team (346-for-1,198) with 268 runs scored, 62 doubles, nine triples and 22 home runs. Cole Dawson currently leads the team in batting average at .373 (50-for-134) and leads the team in runs scored at 38. He is one of six players with at least 20 runs scored.
 
Tyler Sardelli has the highest slugging percentage on the team at .515 thanks to eight doubles, four triples and two home runs. Sardelli is one of six players on the team with at least 20 RBIs. Kirby Jenkins currently leads the team in RBIs with 31.
 
On the mound, the Wonder Boys have a team ERA of 6.91 and have struck out 258 batters in 303.1 innings of work.
 
John Gray, Daniel Hutchison and Emiliano Mata made starts over the past weekend in the games played against Henderson State and figure to be a part of this weekend's rotation as well.
 
Gray is 1-2 with a 7.62 ERA and 16 strikeouts in 28.1 innings. Hutchison is 4-2 with a 5.29 ERA and 47 strikeouts across 51.0 innings. Mata is 1-3 with an 8.06 ERA and 13 strikeouts over 25.2 innings.
 
Eleven relievers have made multiple appearances with JT Cafferty having the most with 14. Cafferty is 1-0 with five saves and a 2.70 ERA and 14 strikeouts in 16.2 innings. Four other relievers have appeared in double-digit games in relief.
 
Leading the Wonder Boys once more is Dave Dawson. The all-time winningest coach in Tech Baseball history, Dawson enters his 16th year in the dugout for the Wonder Boys. In his previous 15 seasons, Dawson has guided amassed a 450-311 record. He has also had eight seasons with 30 or more wins which includes the 2014 season in which he led the team a program-record 44 wins and hosting rights for that year's Central Region Tournament.
 
Overall, Dawson is in his 20th year as a head baseball coach at the collegiate level as he spent four years as head coach at Kansas Wesleyan and totaled 118 wins. His combined win total at Tech and Kansas Wesleyan have him with a career record of 587-420.
 
SCOUTING SOUTHERN NAZARENE
Southern Nazarene enters the game at Tech with a 9-29 overall record and a 3-22 mark in the GAC. The Crimson Storm are coming off a weekend series on the road at East Central and a neutral site mid-week game against Northwestern Oklahoma. Southern Nazarene lost all four games.
 
Offensively, the Crimson Storm are hitting .253 as a team (287-for-1,134) with 227 runs scored, 51 doubles, two triples and 32 home runs.
 
Antonio Sabala leads the team in batting average at .381 (45-for-118). Sabala also leads the team in slugging at .534 thanks to seven doubles, a triple and three home runs. Sabala is second on the team in RBIs with 27 and leads in runs scored with 39. Weston Hicks is the current team-leader in RBIs with 38 and home runs with six.
 
On the mound, the Crimson Storm have a 10.78 team ERA and have struck out 213 batters in 288.0 innings of work.
 
This past weekend, the Crimson Storm had a starting rotation of Trey Orman, Cobey Gorrell and Christian Garcia last weekend against East Central. Orman is 1-4 with a 16.81 ERA and 12 strikeouts in 17.2 innings. Gorrell is 0-1 with a 9.93 ERA and 16 strikeouts in 22.2 innings. Garcia is 2-5 with an 8.31 ERA and 38 strikeouts in 43.1 innings.
 
The Crimson Storm are led by Dr. Grant Ledbetter, who is in his sixth season as head coach at Southern Nazarene. In his time at SNU, Ledbetter is 63-188.
