LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The Arkansas Tech women's tennis team opened up their spring break week of matches on Sunday with a road match at No. 17-ranked West Alabama. The Golden Suns would lose 4-0 to the Tigers, but were competitive throughout the match.
In doubles play, the Golden Suns fell in lines two and three to give UWA the point, but line one was left unfished. At the time it was abandoned, the Golden Suns pairing of
Melanie Griffiths and
Monica Balau were battling the No. 1-ranked doubles team of Shaira Rivera and Valentina Mutilba and their match was 5-3 in favor of Rivera and Mutilba.
Two of the matches left unfinished in singles play were the highlights for the Golden Suns.
At line four,
Maria Krite was working towards a straight sets victory over Emiri Takanishi as she won the first set 7-5 and was up 2-1 in the second set. At line three,
Natalya Montoya was fighting to split sets against her opponent, Valentina Mutilba. Montoya had drooped the first set 2-6, but was knotted at four-all with Mutilba in the second set prior to abandonment.
The Golden Suns will now gear up for their next match this week as they will be at the University of Mobile on Tuesday. That match against the NAIA-affiliate foe is scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
