Box Score LUBBOCK, Texas – The Arkansas Tech volleyball team returned to the court on Friday and played a pair of matches against Minot State and Lubbock Christian. Tech would come out on the down side of both matches, but battled hard in each.
"We didn't get the outcomes we were hoping for today," said head coach
Kera Coleman. "However, we are committed the process of growth and we will continue to battle until we see the successes we are so desperately working towards. Our goals haven't changed and won't change. We know what we're capable of."
MINOT STATE
In the match with Minot, the Golden Suns played their first five-set match of the season as the two teams alternated the first four sets.
Minot captured the opening set 25-19 behind the strength of a .324 attack percentage. That set was tied early 4-all, but the Beavers ripped off a 4-0 run to take control. With a four-point advantage, 10-6, the Beavers created more separation with a 5-0 run. Eventually, the Beavers got to set point while leading the Golden Suns by double-digits.
Displaying resolve, the Golden Suns made things interesting with their own 5-0 run before Minot was able to close out the set.
The Golden Suns continued to build off that late first set momentum and opened the second set on a 5-1 run. Minot would come back and pulled within a point, 7-6, but the Golden Suns responded with a 6-0 burst to re-establish their control.
Late in the set, Minot rallied from three points down to take the lead and gain set-point in the process, 24-23. The Golden Suns, however, would capture the next three points of the set to win the set.
Set three went to the Beavers, putting them up 2-1 in the match. The fourth set, however, was dominated by the Golden Suns and was one of their best sets of the young season.
In that set with the score tied at 5-all, the Golden Suns went on a monster run, scoring 13 of the next 15 points. The big chunk of that surge came with
Jamie Myrick serving. With her serve, the Golden Suns scored eight-straight points. Myrick, herself, was responsible for three of the points via service ace.
Minot would stage a run of their own and pulled within four points of the lead, 18-14, but the Golden Suns were able to put the set away and force a decisive fifth set.
The fifth set saw Minot play relatively flawlessly on offense as they did not commit an attack error. That helped the Beavers win the set 15-7 and the match 3-2.
LUBBOCK CHRISTIAN
A few hours later, the Golden Suns had the tall task of taking on host Lubbock Christian in the primetime match of the day.
That homecourt advantage appeared early in the first set as LCU was able to establish a double-digit lead by the 15-point mark. That early deficit proved to be too much to overcome in set one as the Chaps won 25-14.
LCU got off to another quick start in the second set and carried that to a 25-18 victory.
In the third set, Tech turned a 3-0 early hole into 10-7 lead. Play from there on was tightly-contested with four tie scores and one lead change. Unfortunately for the Golden Suns, that lone lead change put them behind as the Chaps grabbed a 22-21 lead. LCU would go on to capture four of the next five points to win the set and secure the sweep.
