FIRST PITCH
A season-long nine-game road swing continues for the No. 20-ranked Arkansas Tech baseball team as they are set to travel west on I-40 to take on Southwestern Oklahoma in a three-game Great American Conference series.
 
The weekend series against Southwestern Oklahoma is slated to be played Friday and Saturday. The first game is slated for a 2 p.m. start on Friday afternoon. Games two and three will be played as part of a doubleheader on Saturday starting at Noon. Live coverage for all games in the series can be found at: www.ArkansasTechSports.com/coverage.
 
The Wonder Boys and Bulldogs have met 38 times in a series that started in 2010. The two became conference opponents in 2012 when both were charter members of the Great American Conference. In terms of the all-time series record, Tech holds a 22-16 lead over SWOSU.
 
The two teams met twice last regular season as part of a weekend series at Tech. Only two of the games scheduled were played as the final game was canceled due to weather. Tech won the first two games to claim the series.
 
TALKING TECH                                                       
The Wonder Boys enter their weekend series on the road at Southwestern Oklahoma with an overall record of 19-9 and are 12-3 in the GAC. The Wonder Boys will be coming off consecutive losses on the road earlier this week at Delta State. The two mid-week defeats were the first losses in mid-week action for the Wonder Boys this season.
 
Prior to the two games at Delta, the Wonder Boys had won three-straight games thanks to a sweep of Northwestern Oklahoma over last weekend. The first two of those wins were thrillers as Tech won in their final at-bat. The third game was a blowout with the Wonder Boys winning 13-3.
 
Overall, the Wonder Boys enter their series against the Bulldogs hitting .314 as a team (299-for-953) with 248 runs scored, 62 doubles, nine triples and 24 home runs. Brandon Bunton currently leads the team in batting average at .402 (33-for-82) and is one of seven players that have scored at least 20 runs this season. A total of three players have scored 30 or more runs with Sawyer Duddleston pacing the team with 34 runs scored.
 
Keaton Ranallo has been providing the best power production thus far and is leading the team in home runs with seven. His .663 slugging percentage leads the team. Eight other Wonder Boys have hit home runs this season with Duddleston, Markos Cabranes, Sam Stephenson and Logan Schwenke all having multiple homers.
 
On the RBI front, the Wonder Boys have a total of six players with 20 or more RBIs and two that have surpassed 30. Ranallo is also leading the team in RBIs with 33 while Duddleston is two RBIs off that pace with 31.
 
On the mound, the Wonder Boys have a team ERA of 6.58 and have struck out 193 batters in 224.1 innings of work.
 
This past weekend, Tech employed a starting rotation of John Gray, Marshall Brown and Emilano Mata against Northwestern Oklahoma. Gray and Mata have both appeared and started seven games while Brown has made two starts.
 
In terms of the bullpen for the Wonder Boys, Will Horton has made the most relief appearances thus far with 13. Mason Griffin has five of the team's six saves for the Wonder Boys. Gerald Pintarich has the other.
 
Leading the Wonder Boys once more is Dave Dawson. The all-time winningest coach in Tech Baseball history, Dawson enters his 14th year in the dugout for the Wonder Boys. In his previous 13 seasons, Dawson has guided amassed a 380-269 record. He has also had six seasons with 30 or more wins which includes the 2014 season in which he led the team a program-record 44 wins and hosting rights for that year's Central Region Tournament.
 
Overall, Dawson is in his 18th year as a head baseball coach at the collegiate level as he spent four years as head coach at Kansas Wesleyan and totaled 118 wins. Dawson's combined win total at Tech and Kansas Wesleyan stand at 517. He earned the milestone 500th win in the series opener vs. No. 13-ranked Central Missouri back in February.
 
SCOUTING SOUTHWESTERN OKLAHOMA
The Bulldogs enter the series against Tech with a 14-12 overall record and an 8-7 record in the GAC. SWOSU has won their last three games and seven of their last eight games. This past weekend, the Bulldogs came back from a game one loss to Harding and won the series with victories in games two and three. Most-recently, the Bulldogs powered past Cameron 26-7 in mid-week action this past Tuesday.
 
Statistically, the Bulldogs enter the series with Tech hitting .319 as a team (272-for-853) with 239 runs scored, 62 doubles, seven triples and 24 home runs. The leading hitter in terms of average so far is Caleb Clines at .423 (33-for-27). Clines is second on the team in slugging percentage at .603 thanks to five doubles and three home runs. He is also one of five Bulldogs with 20 or more RBIs. Geoff Marlow leads the team in both home runs and RBIs with six homers and 37 RBIs.
 
Six different Bulldogs have scored 20 or more runs runs with Jackson Syring pacing the team with 41 runs scored.
 
This past weekend, the Bulldogs employed a starting rotation of Chris Goldston, Jackson Phillips, and Ernesto Hidrogo against Harding. Phillips and Hidrogo won their starts with Phillips pitching a complete-game in the seven-inning contest. Phillips has the best numbers of starters with a 3.38 ERA, 4-1 record and 50 strikeouts in 37.1 innings of work. SWOSU has also had three other pitchers make multiple starts.
 
Outside of those six arms with multiple starts, the Bulldogs have used 10 other pitchers in relief roles. Philip Sanders is tied with Hidrogo with the most relief appearances with nine. As a team, SWOSU has registered four saves. Those are split between Grant Ewy and Goldston at two apiece.
 
Southwestern Oklahoma is led by Zack Saunders, who is in his 12th season with as head coach of the Bulldogs. In his time at the helm of SWOSU, Saunders is 265-241. He has had eight winning seasons and twice has won 30 or more games.
