Box Score HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – The longest game time-wise in Great American Conference Baseball Tournament history was an elimination game played between No. 8-seed Arkansas Tech and No. 4-seed Southeastern Oklahoma on Sunday. The over four-hour game was ultimately won by Tech as they out-lasted Southeastern by a score of 16-12.
The win for Tech keeps them alive in the GAC Tournament, but they will have a tight turnaround to their next game, which will have a 9:30 a.m. first-pitch on Monday morning. The Wonder Boys (26-22) opponent in the elimination game will be No. 6-seed Oklahoma Baptist. The Bison fell to the elimination bracket earlier on Sunday as they lost in extra innings to No. 2-seed Henderson State.
The game action saw a combined 28 runs and 30 hits. The Wonder Boys were responsible for 16 of the runs and 19 of the hits. All nine batters in Tech's initial starting lineup had at least one hit with five registering multiple hits.
Shelby Quiggins went 4-for-6 with a pair of home runs and five RBIs.
Josh Detweiler went a perfect 5-for-5 with two doubles, a triple and four RBIs.
As far as scoring went, Southeastern scored the first two runs with single tallies in the first and second innings. Tech got their first run in the top of the third. The Savage Storm then scored two more runs in the fourth to take a 4-1 lead.
A five-run top of the fifth by Tech swung the lead in their favor, 6-4. The Savage Storm answered right back with four runs in the bottom of the frame to take a two-run lead. The Wonder Boys then tied it in the sixth.
Neither team scored in their next trips to the plate, but Southeastern broke the tie with three-runs in the bottom of the seventh.
In the top of the eighth, Quiggins and
Carter Thessing went back-to-back with home runs to tie the game at 11-all. Quiggins' blast was a no-doubt two-run bomb, while Thessing's was obviously a solo home run following Quiggins.
The Savage Storm were held off the board in the bottom of the frame.
In the top of the ninth, the Wonder Boys plated five runs on three hits. The first two runs scored on a double through the left side by Detweiler. Two batters later, Quiggins unloaded for a three-run homer for his second blast of the game.
Southeastern would score a run in the bottom of the inning and brought the potential tying run to the plate to make things interesting, but
Ty Van Meter was able to put the finishing touches on the game.
Marshall Brown got the win for Tech and improved to 3-0 on the season.
