RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – Off to a 2-0 start in the Great American Conference, the Arkansas Tech women's tennis team is set to play the most important part of their schedule this weekend as they are home against Harding on Friday and home again the following day against Southeastern Oklahoma.
All three of the teams, including Tech, are unbeaten in the Great American Conference at the time of this preview.
Harding and Southeastern Oklahoma, however, are in action against one another at the time of this writing and one will enter their match with the Golden Suns on their respective day with one loss on the conference record while the other will remain unbeaten.
Entering the weekend, the Golden Suns are 6-5 overall and 2-0 in the GAC. They are coming off a win in their last match, a 6-1 dominant victory over Southern Arkansas. In the match prior, the Golden Suns pushed then-ranked No. 35 Angelo State to the brink and came up just short at home, 3-4.
The Golden Suns' first pivotal match will be against Harding. The Bisons will be ranked No. 34 according to the latest ITA National Rankings released earlier on Thursday afternoon. It will also be the second meeting between the two teams as they played a non-conference match in Searcy back on March 10. Harding won that match 5-2.
After playing Harding, the Golden Suns will face another nationally-ranked opponent as Southeastern Oklahoma will check in as the No. 41-ranked team according the latest ITA poll. It will be the first time this year that Tech and Southeastern will have met. It will also be just the fourth true road match for the Savage Storm. Entering present their match with Harding, Southeastern is 1-1 on the road. At neutral sites, they are 4-1 and at home they are 9-3.
While the Southeastern Oklahoma match is technically the final home match of the regular season, the Golden Suns will honor their lone senior on the 2021-22 team,
Megan Bell, after the match against Harding on Friday afternoon where a large crowd is expected to be at the Chartwells Women's Sports Complex.
First-serve for the Harding match on Friday is scheduled for 2 p.m. while the Saturday match with Southeastern Oklahoma will start at 11 a.m.
