RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – The Arkansas Tech baseball team is set for their second mid-week game of the season as they travel to Clinton, Miss. on Wednesday to take on Mississippi College. This will be the second meeting of the year between the two teams as they played back in early February in Russellville. Tech won that contest 9-3.
SCOUTING MISSISSIPPI COLLEGE
The Choctaws enter play 6-12 overall and are coming off a big upset win over No. 1 Tampa in their most-recent game played. Prior to that win, however, the Choctaws had lost three-straight, losing an earlier mid-week game against No. 8 Southern Arkansas and the first two games of the series at Tampa.
Offensively, the Choctaws are hitting .255 as a team (147-for-577) with 96 runs scored, 30 doubles, one triple and eight home runs. Entering the mid-week game, the Choctaws have two players hitting .300 or better with Cody Crifasi leading the way at .333 (19-for-57).
In terms of power numbers, the Choctaws have four players with a home run. Ken Scott leads the team with three homers. He also paced the team in RBIs with 18. Markarius Lee and Caleb Reese are next on the team with two home runs each.
On the mound, the Choctaws have a 5.78 team ERA and have struck out 124 batters in 148.0 innings of work.
The Choctaws have used a weekend rotation of Jackson Bridges, Joseph Cuomo and Austin Huggins as that trio have all started five games so far on the mound. Filling out the remainder of the starting nods have been Lance Wade and Gavin LeBlanc. Wade has appeared in three games and made two starts while LeBlanc has made five appearances and one start.
In the first mid-week meeting between the two, Wade got the start. He suffered the loss after pitching 4.2 innings, allowing 10 hits and eight earned runs. He did strikeout seven and walked none, however.
TECH TIDBITS
The Wonder Boys enter play 9-6 overall and are looking to snap a three-game skid after being swept on the road at No. 8 Southern Arkansas last weekend.
Offensively, the Wonder Boys enter play against Mississippi College hitting .290 as a team (138-for-476) with 102 runs scored, 20 doubles, four triples and 20 home runs. Individually, the Wonder Boys have five batters with at least 25 at-bats hitting .300 or better and are currently led by
Yadier Medina's .409 average (18-for-44).
In terms of power numbers, the Wonder Boys are led by
Shelby Quiggins as he is pacing the team in home runs with five.
Kandon Bennett and
Josh Detweiler are next with four home runs each. Quiggins also leads the team in RBIs with 13 RBIs. Three other Wonder Boys have driven in at least 10 runs as well.
On the mound, the Wonder Boys have a team ERA of 5.28 and have struck out 136 batters in 121.0 innings of work.
Patrick Miner,
Shane Scott and
Will Horton have made up the weekend rotation early on and are 6-3 combined with 73 strikeouts in 69.1 innings of work. Miner paces the starters with a 3-0 record and a 4.18 ERA with 36 strikeouts in 28.0 innings. Scott is 2-1 with a 4.44 ERA and has 17 strikeouts in 24.1 innings. Horton is currently 1-2 with a 7.41 ERA and has 20 strikeouts in 17.0 innings of work.
The other pitcher to have started a game for the Wonder Boys is
John Walsh. He started their only true mid-week game of the year this past week at Union. In that start, Walsh earned the win after working a predetermined 3.0 innings. He allowed no hits, one earned run, walked four and struck out four. Overall, for the season, Walsh has appeared in five games and has 11 strikeouts in 8.2 innings of work.
In relief, the Wonder Boys have notched three saves with
Ty Van Meter accounting for two of the saves. He currently has 11 strikeouts in 5.2 innings.
