Golden Suns ease past Tigers for first GAC win

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – The Arkansas Tech women's tennis team continued its winning ways on Thursday, and in doing so, picked up their first Great American Conference win of the season, beating Ouachita on the road, 6-1.

The match got off to a great start for the Golden Suns (5-4, 1-0 GAC) as they swept through doubles play, dropping just six games along the way. The No. 2 doubles pairing of Aastha Dargude and Madalena Amil blanked their opponents, 6-0. Lea Grinberg and Daniela Baez at No. 1 doubles won 6-2 and Megan Bell and Melanie Griffiths at No. 3 doubles took care of business, 6-4.

Up a point in the team match, Tech quickly took a 2-0 lead thanks to an impressively dominant 6-0, 6-1 win at the top flight singles match by Grinberg.

Ouachita then picked up their lone point of the match at No. 2 singles as Baez was forced to retire due to injury in the midst of the second set. She had previously dropped the first set, 6-3 and was trailing the second set 3-0 prior to the injury.

Tech then had clean sweeps across the board to wrap up the match.

Amil was the third point to score for the Golden Suns with a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. singles. Dargude, Griffiths and Maria Krite then picked up straight-sets victories in their respective singles matches.

The Golden Suns will now prepare for a pair of spring break matches next week. Those matches will take place in Mobile, Alabama and will see the Suns take on Spring Hill College and the University of Mobile, both on Tuesday, March 22. The match with Spring Hill is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. while the match with Mobile is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start.
