RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – After splitting non-conference games earlier this year, the Arkansas Tech and Henderson State baseball teams are set to play one another with a little more at stake as Tech hosts Henderson for a three-game Great American Conference series starting on Saturday night.
The Wonder Boys come into the series on a three-game winning streak after sweeping Henderson's cross-street rivals in Arkadelphia, the Ouachita Tigers. In that series, the Wonder Boys got back on track offensively while also continuing to pitch well, out-scoring the Tigers 24-8.
With an overall record of 17-8, the Wonder Boys are also 14-4 in the GAC and are currently tied atop the standings with Oklahoma Baptist, a team that Tech dropped their first conference series to a couple of weeks ago.
Statistically, the Wonder Boys are hitting .337 as a team (292-for-867) with 204 runs scored, 60 doubles, 11 triples and 25 home runs. Collectively their lineup is posting a .419 on-base percentage and a .516 slugging percentage.
Seven of their everyday players are hitting over .300 with six over the .350 mark. Both
Trace Maddux and
Josh Detweiler are tied for the team-lead in average at .391. Maddux has 36 hits, six doubles, four triples, three home runs and 27 RBIs. Detweiler, on the other hand, has 34 hits, eight doubles, three triples, five home runs and 22 RBIs. The five homers for Detweiler are tied for the team-lead with
Jonathon Arrieta while Maddux's 27 RBIs is just one back of Arrieta's team-leading 28.
On the mound, the Wonder Boys have a 4.01 ERA as a team and have registered 229 strikeouts in 202.0 innings of work. The weekend rotation has remained the same all season long for the Wonder Boys with
Hayes Cox,
Patrick Miner and
Riyan Rodriguez combining for 24 of the team's 25 starts.
Miner has the lowest ERA among the starters at 3.69 and is 5-1 with 48 strikeouts in 46.1 innings of work. Rodriguez is not far back of the ERA mark at 3.89 and is 2-3 on the season with 31 strikeouts in 34.2 innings. Cox has the most wins of the bunch with six. He has also notched 40 strikeouts in 42.1 innings.
For the Reddies, they enter play with a 14-10 overall record and a 10-8 mark in the GAC. Most-recently, they are coming off a series loss at home to Southern Arkansas. The Reddies would win the middle game of that series 3-2, but dropped the opening and final game of the set.
Statistically, the Reddies are hitting .299 as a team (230-for-769) with 173 runs scored, 42 doubles, nine triples and 32 home runs. They are also getting on-base at a .387 clip and have a team slugging percentage of .502.
Individually, the Reddies have three players that have played and started in all 24 games so far and bat over .300. The leading hitter in terms of average is Greyson Stevens at .360 (36-for-100). Stevens also has four doubles, a triple, six home runs and 19 RBIs. The top-power bat in their lineup has been Joe Meyers as he leads the team in home runs with seven and RBIs with 29.
On the mound, the Reddies have a 5.15 team ERA and have struck out 173 batters in 192.1 innings pitched. The weekend rotation has been fairly consistent with Spencer Taack and Austin Cross starting a game in all seven weekends of action. Taack is pacing the team in victories with four and has the lowest ERA among starters at 4.11. Taack also leads the team in strikeouts with 34 in 35.0 innings. Cross is 2-3 with a 5.93 ERA and has 18 strikeouts in 30.1 innings.
