RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – The stage is set for a marquee Great American Conference series between the top-two teams in the GAC as Arkansas Tech and Oklahoma Baptist will battle for the top spot in the league standings this weekend out at Baswell Field.
The Wonder Boys, who are currently in first place in the GAC standings at 10-2, will come into the three-game series as one of the hottest teams around as they have won 11 of their last 13 games, which includes four-straight wins. In each of those last four victories, the Wonder Boys have been red-hot at the plate having scored double-digit runs and notching at least 17 hits. All told, during the four-game stretch, the Wonder Boys have totaled 56 runs on 75 hits.
The recent offensive outbreak has bolstered the Wonder Boys' overall season stats and coming into the weekend with Oklahoma Baptist, Tech is hitting .332 as a team (219-for-659) with 152 runs scored, 47 doubles, seven triples and 21 home runs. The Wonder Boys also currently have a .404 team on-base percentage as well as a .520 team slugging percentage.
Seven batters in their everyday lineup are currently hitting over .300 with the leading hitter,
Trace Maddux, up over the .400 mark at .405 (30-for-74).
Jonathon Arrieta and
Josh Detweiler are tied for the team-lead in home runs with five apiece. Arrieta is currently the team leader in RBIs with 25.
While the offensive numbers have been staggering over the recent stretch, the Wonder Boys' pitching has been impressive as well. In their last four games, Tech pitching has allowed just 16 runs on 30 hits.
Heading into the weekend, the Wonder Boys have a team ERA of 3.89 and have struck out 182 batters in 155.0 innings of work. The three arms in the weekend rotation have combined for a 9-4 record and a 3.54 ERA with 96 strikeouts in 94.2 innings of work.
Hayes Cox has had the most success thus far out of the weekend rotation and is 5-0 with a 2.86 ERA. He also has 32 strikeouts in 34.2 innings.
Patrick Miner is not far off Cox's pace and is 3-1 with a 3.67 ERA and a GAC-best 40 strikeouts in 34.1 innings of work.
While the starting pitching has been top-notch this year, so has the Wonder Boys' bullpen. Six different relievers that have made more than one appearance have an ERA under 3.00. Those arms have also combined for 58 strikeouts in 32.0 innings and have a 2.25 ERA.
In the opposing dugout, the Bison come into play 10-6 overall and a game back of the Wonder Boys in the GAC at 9-3. The Bison are just as hot as the Wonder Boys as they have won five of their last six games and have scored double-digit runs in each of those victories. Most-recently, the Bison avenged a shutout loss to Harding and took the next two games to claim the series.
Offensively, the Bison are hitting .297 as a team and have four players hitting over .300. Their leading hitter in terms of average is Kaimana Bartolome at .407 (24-for-59). He is also the team-leader in RBIs with 18 and is second on the club in home runs with five. The top home run hitter thus far for the Bison is Hector Ruvalcaba with seven.
On the mound, the Bison have a team ERA of 5.65 and have notched 130 strikeouts in 121.0 innings of work. The Bison have used four different starting pitchers with two seeing starts in each weekend series. Both of those arms, Bo Dallas and Jake Lipetzky, have ERAs under 4.00 and have combined for 52 strikeouts in 42 innings. Lipetzky is leading the team in strikeouts with 35.
