Box Score TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – The Arkansas Tech women's tennis team completed the fall portion of their 2021-22 schedule over the past weekend as they took part in the Rumble by the River, hosted by Northeastern State.
The final event of the fall saw the Golden Suns play singles and doubles matches against Harding, Northeastern State and Midwestern State in a round robin format.
Individually,
Daniela Baez had the most success over the weekend as she went 2-1 in Flight 3 singles and teamed up with
Lea Grinberg at Flight 1 doubles to go 2-1 as well. Baez's wins in singles play came against Northeastern State's Melissa Vera (6-0, 6-1) and Midwestern State's Kyndall Quiroz (6-2, 6-3). In doubles play, Baez and Grinberg picked up victories against Harding and Northeastern State's top doubles teams (6-4 vs. Harding and 6-3 vs. NSU).
Grinberg also added a singles victory to her weekend as she knocked off Harding's top-flight player in Grace Dodd (4-6, 6-3 [3]).
Other singles victories for the Golden Suns were turned in by
Melanie Griffiths (Flight 5),
Meaghan Butler (Flight 6),
Maggie Holcomb (Flight 7),
Megan Bell (Flight 8) and
Isabella Major (Flight 8).
Of those, Butler had two wins with victories at her flight against Harding's Jing Yang (1-6, 6-4 [3]) and Northeastern State's Aubrey Bailey (6-1, 6-0). Bell and Major split the matches played at Flight 8 singles with Bell beating Midwestern State's Kanaha Furutani (6-2, 6-0) and Major beating Harding's Ashley Nilsson (7-6, 7-5).
Additionally, in doubles action,
Aastha Dargude and
Maria Krite earned a victory against Northeastern State's Flight 2 pairing of Belinda Jayaprakash and Maria Popova (6-3).
The Flight 3 doubles paring of Bell and Major picked up two wins, beating Northeastern State (7-6 [2]) and Harding (6-3). In Flight 4 doubles, Butler and Griffiths teamed up to beat Midwestern State (6-2). Butler then paired the remaining two doubles matches of that flight with Holcomb and that duo went 1-1 with a win over Northeastern State (6-2).
The Golden Suns will now enter into a bit of an off-season mode as their fall schedule has completed and will begin preparing for their spring season, which gets underway on Friday, February 11 at home against Missouri Western State in a non-conference dual.
