Week Four Game Notes - Special "Airplane!" Edition
RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. - The 2017 Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys football team will take to the gridiron this Saturday with the opportunity to do something that has just happened once for the Wonder Boys football program since the 2006 season - start the season at 4-0. Â
That happened during the Wonder Boys' 2015 season, as Arkansas Tech carried its hot start into a postseason berth and eventual win in the C.H.A.M.P.S. Heart of Texas Bowl. The nationally 16th-ranked Wonder Boys (3-0) will have the opportunity to match that start with a matchup against an ascendant Southern Nazarene (2-1) team in Bethany.Â
Kickoff from the SNU Football Stadium is set for 1 p.m., with live audio, video, and statistics available at www.arkansastechsports.com. The game will be broadcast live locally on 102.3-FM (KCJC).Â
Through three weeks of the 2017 football season, Arkansas Tech has been firing on all cylinders. Tech followed up back-to-back wins against ranked opposition to open the season with a 58-21 win over Oklahoma Baptist this past Saturday in Russellville.
Ty Reasnor found
Tevin McKenzie three times for touchdown strikes, while Tech turned in scores both on defense (46-yard interception return by
Jandt Weary) and special teams (28 yard punt block return by
Kristian Thompson).Â
The Tech defense was led by
Seth Culp's 11 tackles, while K.J. Reid turned in a big performance with eight tackles, one sack, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. The consistent solid play of the Wonder Boys' defense has led Tech to the stingiest defense in the Great American Conference thus far - allowing a league-low 15 points per contest.Â
The Wonder Boys will square off against a Southern Nazarene squad that completed one of the most - if not the most - improbable comebacks in the history of the Great American Conference this past Saturday in Searcy. Down 27-13 with just 50 seconds to play, SNU put 14 points on the scoreboard in 20 seconds of game play to capture a stunning victory over the defending GAC champions one week after the Crimson Storm edged East Central in Ada.
The Crimson Storm are led offensively by quarterback Jacob Spady, who has thrown for 299 yards and four touchdowns through three weeks of the season. Spady has also been SNU's leading rusher, with 41 carries for 240 yards and two scores.Â
Saturday's tilt is part of a full slate of Great American Conference contests taking place in Oklahoma this weekend. Fellow GAC undefeated Southeastern Oklahoma will host UAM, while Ouachita travels to East Central, Henderson State travels to SWOSU, Southern Arkansas travels to Northwestern Oklahoma, and Harding will square off against Oklahoma Baptist.
