RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – With a 3-0 road victory at Ouachita Baptist, the Arkansas Tech volleyball team will carry a three-match win streak back to Arkadelphia on Tuesday for a second-consecutive Great American Conference road match against Henderson State. The match will start at 6 p.m. in the Duke Wells Center.
The Golden Suns (9-5, 3-0 GAC) are coming off a strong week of volleyball as they picked up a 3-0 (28-26, 25-19, 25-15) win in Arkadelphia last week against Ouachita Baptist.
Arkansas Tech has had a prolific net game so far this season, leading the GAC in kills per set (14), assists (13), and are second in the conference in blocks per set (1.91).
Freshman
Hunter Eshnaur has led the potent ATU offense and is currently fifth in the GAC in kills per set (3.67) and fourth in points per set (4.08). Senior
Katie Huff has also provided a strong presence at the net, sitting at 14th in the GAC in kills per set (2.67), second in blocks per set (1.06), and 12th in points per set (3.57).
However, it appears the catalyst for the Golden Suns offense of late has been the play of freshman setter
Sarita Stegall. For a second consecutive week, Stegall has earned GAC Setter of the Week honors for her play against Harding and Ouachita Baptist. She has made the volleyball court a challenging place for opponents the last seven matches, recording double-doubles in six of those matches and averaging 11.2 assists per set and 3.0 digs per set.
Defensively, sophomore defensive specialist
Madison Nagel has controlled the back row, averaging 5.37 digs per set, currently the third-best mark in the GAC.
While the Golden Suns keep winning, the Reddies have had a reversal of fortunes. Henderson State (1-14, 0-3 GAC) hasn't won a match since a 3-0 win over Central Baptist College. The Reddies have lost 10 straight matches and have been swept in straight sets in all 10 of those matches. HSU is coming off a 3-0 (17-25, 14-25, 18-25) loss to Southern Arkansas at home.
ATU has dominated the series against Henderson State as of late. The Golden Suns swept them in straight sets both at home and on the road last season. Arkansas Tech hasn't lost a set to Henderson State since October 12, 2010 in a 3-1 win in Arkadelphia and hasn't lost to the Reddies since November 1, 2007. Overall, the Suns have won 14 straight matches against Henderson State.
