WONDER BOYS HOST RANGERS IN THREE-GAME SET

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. — With its first three-game conference sweep of the season under its belt, the Arkansas Tech baseball team is on a four-game winning streak and finds itself right back in the conversation for the postseason as its heads into a three-game set Sunday and Monday against Northwestern Oklahoma.

The Wonder Boys (24-17, 10-10 GAC) have dropped just one game to the Rangers (17-23, 8-16 GAC) since they joined the conference, going 5-1 in a pair of regular-season series over the past two seasons. Tech will be looking for similar results this weekend, as it currently sits in seventh place in the standings, outside of the cutoff for the GAC tournament, but just a half game behind fifth and sixth places.

Tech has been scoring runs in droves, and that hasn't stopped recently, as the offense is averaging just under 10 runs per game and is hitting .405 over the four-game streak. For the season, the Wonder Boys are third in the league with a .307 team batting average, but lead the way with 307 runs scored, 42 home runs and a .472 slugging percentage.

Individually, Patrick Castleberry continues to get it done at the plate in just about every way possible, appearing in the top 10 of every offensive statistical category the GAC keeps except for triples, steals and walks. He leads the way with 43 runs scored, 12 home runs, 57 RBIs, 106 total bases and a .731 slugging percentage, and is second with 55 hits and a .477 on-base percentage. Bryan Heward isn't far behind him with a .358 average with nine homers, 39 RBIs and nine steals, while Cole Fergus adds a .354 average, 11 home runs and 35 RBIs. In all, seven Wonder Boys have at least a .300 batting average.

The pitching staff has also kept opposing bats cold during the win streak. Trent Armstrong opened up last weekend's series against Southwestern Oklahoma with a nine-inning complete game, allowing just two earned runs. Cody Jones followed that with his own nine-inning complete game with just three earned runs, and Rafiel Johnson went five innings and allowed just two runs in his first career start for the Wonder Boys. Aaron Johnson earned the win Tuesday against Northeastern State with five innings of three-hit work, and the bullpen has combined to toss three innings of effective relief over the stretch.

Jeff Martin paces the Northwestern bats, hitting .389 with three home runs, 15 doubles and 36 RBIs, along with 11 stolen bases. Matt Benn adds a .333 average with seven home runs, 11 doubles and 25 batted in. On the mound, Matthew Bickford is the top starter, going 4-5 with a 3.76 ERA and two shutouts over 55 innings. Brody Ausfahl posts a 4.43 ERA and 34 strikeouts over 44 2/3 innings, while Alexander Svetgoff leads the team with a 3.26 ERA, earning a 5-1 record out of the bullpen in 30 1/3 innings.

The series is set for a noon doubleheader Sunday and single game noon Monday. Live audio and statistics will be available for all three games at www.arkansastechsports.com.
