RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. — Transitioning to the middle part of its Great American Conference schedule, the Arkansas Tech women's volleyball team heads to Oklahoma this Thursday and Friday to face Southeastern Oklahoma and East Central on back-to-back nights.
The Golden Suns (11-5, 5-0 GAC) enter the doubleheader tied with Oklahoma Baptist at the top of the league standings, and on a five-match winning streak. Tech has dropped just two sets over that run, and just three in its first five conference matchups. The five GAC victories to start the season runs the Suns' conference winning streak to 14 consecutive regular season contests.
Tech continues to lead the GAC in both assists and kills per set, with 12.93 and 13.91, respectively, and is third in both hitting percentage (.206) and opponent hitting percentage (.178). The Suns are also second in blocks (1.85) and fourth in digs (16.77).
Senior
Katie Huff leads the team in hitting percentage (.287) and is second in the conference with 1.02 blocks per set, while adding 2.62 kills per set, which is second on the team. Freshman
Hunter Eshnaur leads the team with 3.64 kills, which is fourth in the GAC, and adds 0.30 aces per set after picking up six in Friday's win over Arkansas-Monticello. Fellow freshman
Sarita Stegall is sixth in the conference with 9.15 assists, and continues to lead with 11.87 helpers in conference play. Sophomore
Madison Nagel is fourth in the league with 5.18 digs, and also adds 0.30 aces per set.
Tech earned a 3-1 victory over the Cotton Blossoms, getting a pair of stellar efforts from senior
Haley Owen and sophomore
McCall Wilkins. Owen tallied a career-high 11 kills on just 19 swings with no errors for a .579 hitting percentage, upping her season average to 1.67 kills per set. She's netted at least six kills eight times this season, including five of the past six matches. Wilkins put up 10 kills against UAM, the third time she's hit double digits this season, and totaled three blocks.
The roadtrip begins with a 7 p.m. matchup against Southeastern (4-12, 2-3 GAC), which has won just two matches in 10 tries against the Golden Suns after falling 3-1 last year at home. The Savage Storm are fourth in the GAC with a .200 hitting percentage, but allow opponents to hit .236 against them.
Abby Jameson leads the team and is second in the GAC with 3.75 kills, and adds 2.91 digs. Arianna Baker and Julia Benford are both hitting .300 on the season, and are 13th and 18th in the league with 0.67 and 0.62 blocks per set. Benford is also second on the team with 2.58 kills. Alissa Benson puts up 9.18 assists, which is fifth in the conference, and Charlene Nerio leads the way with 4.07 digs.
Tech follows 24 hours later with a 7 p.m. meeting Friday with East Central (3-12, 0-5 GAC). The Suns hold a 12-1 advantage over the Tigers all-time, winning 10 straight and all seven meetings as members of the GAC. They've won all but one set in the last eight matches, and have won 13 sets in a row dating back to 2011.
Madyson Gill leads the Tigers with 2.78 kills and 3.32 points, and is second with 2.74 digs. She also leads, and is eighth in the conference, with 0.33 aces per set. Hayley Gerken boasts a .231 hitting percentage, and adds 0.70 blocks per set, teaming with Madeline Mayer, who stuffs 0.63 attempts. Taylor Turner posts 8.35 assists, while Lily Porsa leads the way with 3.49 digs.
The roadtrip is the first of three straight weekends where the Golden Suns will play two Oklahoma squads on back-to-back nights, with home matches against Southwestern Oklahoma and Northwestern Oklahoma Oct. 16-17, and a trip to Oklahoma Baptist and Southern Nazarene the following weekend.
