TECH SPLITS ON FINAL DAY OF MIDWESTERN STATE TOURNEY

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Kaylee Konsella had a 29-kill day, Sierra Nighswonger dished out 64 assists, and Madison Nagel collected 52 digs on the day as the Arkansas Tech Golden Suns (2-2) split on the final day of the Midwestern State Hampton Inn-vitational, falling 3-1 to Colorado State-Pueblo (1-2) and topping host Midwestern State (3-1) 3-2 in a five-set thriller to close play.

The Golden Suns hit .262 in the opening set of the first match en route to a 26-24 win. However, CSU-Pueblo rallied to knot the match with a 25-23 win in the second set, and picked up 26-24 and 25-21 wins in the subsequent sets to claim the match victory.

Konsella's 14 kills in the match tied CSU-Pueblo's Mariangel Perez for a match high. Emily Todd and McCall Wilkins reached double-digits with 12 and 11 kills, respectively, while Nighswonger led all players with 36 assists. Alyssa Kool dished out 11 assists as well. Nagel turned in a 21-dig effort in the loss, while Kaci Jackson and Todd both added 12 digs.

The Golden Suns outhit the ThunderWolves .166 to .153 for the match, and Tech turned in positive hitting percentages in all four sets.

In addition to her 12-kill, 12-dig effort, Todd was nearly flawless on serve-receive, successfully receiving 34 of 35 serves.

In the finale, Midwestern State won a close 25-22 decision in the opening set before running away with a 25-12 win in the second set. In the third set, the Mustangs had match point four times, but each time the Golden Suns answered. Tech used an attack error to pull ahead, and Konsella's kill from Kool closed the third set to keep the Golden Suns alive.

Tech took a 25-22 decision in the fourth set to knot the match at two sets apiece, and the Golden Suns held on for the win after a 16-14 victory in the fifth set.

Todd and Konsella had 15 kills in the win, Kool dished out 33 assists, Nighswonger passed out 28, while Nagel added 31 digs. Todd tallied 25 digs, Kool added 12, and Nighswonger added 10 in the winning effort.

The Golden Suns have notched a positive hitting percentage in each of the 15 sets the team has played thus far this season.

Arkansas Tech returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 9, opening Great American Conference play and the home portion of their schedule with a 6 p.m. contest against
Henderson State.
