Katie Huff turned in a seven-kill, four-block effort in the opening match, while going for 19 kills and six blocks in the nightcap as the Arkansas Tech Golden Suns (5-2) picked up a pair of wins on the opening day of the Scott Jones Classic, topping Mount Olive (2-4) 3-0 in the opener and taking a 3-2 win over Oakland City (1-2) in the day's finale.
"We struggled to play fluidly today," said Golden Suns head coach
Kristy Bayer. "In the first match, we were able to play strong offensively. In the second match, we struggled to get into a defensive rhythm.
Katie Huff had a strong match against OCU.
Sierra Nighswonger made some good setting decisions as we got deep into our five-set match."
In the opener, the Golden Suns won 25-20, 25-18, and 25-11 to make quick work of Mount Olive. Huff hit .667 after notching seven kills on nine swings with one error,
McCall Wilkins hit .714 with six kills, while
Kaci Jackson hit .500 with six kills.
Emily Todd led Tech with eight kills.
Nighswonger and
Alyssa Kool both dished out 16 assists in the win, while
Madison Nagel had a match-best 12 digs.
Tech outhit Mount Olive .346 to .118, including a match-high .381 in the third set.
In the finale, Huff was one of four Golden Suns to reach double digits, and led the team with a .483 hitting percentage. Todd (14 kills),
Kaci Jackson (13 kills), and
Kaylee Konsella (12 kills) led the offensive effort. Nighswonger had 40 assists, Kool added 17, and Nagel led Tech with 20 digs. Todd and Jackson had double-doubles with 13 and 10 kills, respectively, while Nighswonger also reached double digits in digs with 11.
Huff's six blocks (one solo, five assisted) were a part of nine total team blocks for the Golden Suns in the nightcap. Todd assisted on four, while Jackson, Wilkins, and
Haley Owen assisted on a pair.
The Golden Suns will conclude play at the Scott Jones Classic with a 2 p.m. matchup against host Trevecca Nazarene on Saturday.
"We have to play better tomorrow," said Bayer. "Everything is about preparing for Tuesday."
