ENID, Okla. – Chance Scamardo turned in a five-hit performance, Jay Johnson and James Sharp both had four RBIs, Sage Boehner reached base seven times, and Mason Reynolds scattered six hits over nine innings of work as the No. 3 Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys baseball team (42-9) routed Southwestern Oklahoma (25-23) 16-3 in an elimination contest at the Great American Conference championship tournament.
Scamardo's five hits tied a Great American Conference championship record, while the Wonder Boys' 23 hits also set a championship record.
The Wonder Boys opened scoring on a two-run single by Jay Johnson to take an early 2-0 lead, but Southwestern Oklahoma struck back immediately, using a Brandon Ruiz solo homer to pull to within 2-1 in the bottom of the first inning.
After the Wonder Boys loaded the bases for the second time in the third inning, an RBI single by Keenan Jumper pushed the Tech lead to 3-1. Sharp came to the plate next, and hit a grand slam to left that gave Tech a 7-1 lead.
Five runs crossed the plate in the inning, and the Wonder Boys would bat around once more and add another five-run inning in the fifth, using RBI singles by Scamardo, Patrick Castleberry, Zac Johnson, and Jay Johnson, and a based-loaded hit-by-pitch of Kris Ayers to push ahead 12-2.
An RBI grounder by Ayers in the sixth and a solo homer by Jay Johnson in the seventh pushed the Tech lead to 14-2, and after SWOSU scored another run in the eighth, an RBI grounder by Scamardo and an RBI double by Castleberry pushed Tech's lead to its final margin, 16-3.
The Wonder Boys were able to preserve the bullpen as Reynolds went the distance, scattering six hits over nine innings and allowing three runs, two earned. The senior walked two and fanned four, improving to 8-0 on the season.
Seven Arkansas Tech players had multiple hits, loading the bases seven times during the contest.
