CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Arkansas Tech softball team put on an offensive clinic in their road doubleheader sweep at Delta State on Tuesday afternoon. Across both games, the Golden Suns scored 22 runs on 23 hits with eight of those hits being for extra bases.
GAME ONE
The opening game got off to a resounding start as
Anna Winkfield homered to right-centerfield on the very first pitch of the game. Two innings later, the Golden Suns completely broke the game open with eight runs.
That inning featured only three hits as the Golden Suns took advantage of four walks and a hit-by-pitch. Two of the walks and the HBP came with the bases loaded to force in runs. The big blow in the inning was a grand slam off the bat of Winkfield.
Winkfield would go on to bat once more with the bases loaded in the fourth and she would clear the bases with a double to left-center to give her an eye-popping eight RBIs in the game. The eight RBIs by Winkfield also set a new single-game record, surpassing the previous record of seven, done both by former Golden Suns, Caitlyn Wells and Hayley Hudson.
Prior to Winkfield's bases-clearing double,
Aubree Jones hit a solo home run and
Sharlee Jackson had a RBI single.
Delta State would score their lone run in the bottom of the fourth, but the Golden Suns got that run back in the fifth as
Caroline Wilhelm was hit-by-a-pitch with the bases loaded.
GAME TWO
The second game took some time to get the offense rolling, but once they cracked the seal in fifth on a two-run home run by
Aaliyah Dixon, the Golden Suns would come back to tack on five runs in the seventh to build up a commanding lead.
Two innings after her homer, Dixon would leave the park again, this time for a solo shot to lead off the seventh.
Later in the frame, the Golden Suns would get a RBI single from
Aly White, a two-run single from
Riley Drake and a RBI single from
Victoria Hughes.
Delta State would score their lone run in the bottom of the seventh.
