RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – The Arkansas Tech women's basketball team faced a tenacious Arkansas-Monticello team looking to pull off a big upset, but Tech was able to keep that from happening with a 75-69 win at home on Monday night.
The Golden Suns would not trail at any point in the game and were up by as much as 19 points in the second quarter before going into the locker room with a 12-point advantage, 43-31. The second half, however, is where the Cotton Blossoms began to make their comeback effort.
In the third quarter, UAM out-scored Tech 21-19 and got as close as five points of the lead about halfway through the period. The Golden Suns were able to double that advantage heading into the fourth quarter, leading 62-52.
The Cotton Blossoms would not go quietly in the fourth quarter and after being down by 12 points with 2:22 left, UAM would pull all the way within three points of the Tech lead, 71-68, with 30 seconds left in regulation.
Clutch free throw shooting by the Golden Suns' standout freshman
Logan Young over the next two possessions helped Tech put the game away as she was 4-for-4 from the line those two trips. Overall, Young was 12-of-12 from the charity stripe and ended with 20 points. It was her ninth game this season with at least points scored.
Jadah Pickens was next in scoring with 19 points followed by 14 points from
AbbiGrace Cunningham and 11 off the bench from
Dessie Lancaster.
The Golden Suns will now prepare for a heavyweight showdown on the road at Harding this coming Thursday night. Both teams are tied atop the Great American Conference standings at 13-3 and the clash should be a nationally-ranked one as the Golden Suns were receiving votes in the latest WBCA Top-25 while Harding was No. 11.
