MAGNOLIA, Ark. – The Arkansas Tech baseball team secured their third conference series of the season with a doubleheader split on the road at Southern Arkansas on Saturday afternoon. Tech won the first game, 8-3 to give them the series, while SAU staved off the sweep with a 7-3 win in game two.
GAME ONE
The Wonder Boys were the first to crack the scoreboard in the game, doing so with a single run in the top of the second inning.
Weston Johnston led the inning off by reaching on an error by the SAU second baseman. He was then sacrificed over to second on a bunt from
Braden Watkins.
With Johnston in scoring position,
Brendyn Bard drove him home on a single to left field.
The Wonder Boys then made it 2-0 with a run in the top of the fourth on a RBI double by
Drew Vega. SAU pushed across a run in their half of the inning to make it a 2-1 game.
In the top of the fifth, the Wonder Boys scored three runs on four hits to take control of the game.
Tommy Caya led the inning off with a single to left-centerfield.
Cole Dawson then singled to short. Both then scored on a two-RBI triple down the right field line off the bat of
Tyler Sardelli. Two batters later, Sardelli scored on a RBI fielder's choice by
Kirby Jenkins.
In the sixth, Caya doubled home Bard, who led the inning off with a single through the left side.
SAU hit a two-run home run in the seventh to make it a 6-3 game, but Tech scored single runs of insurance in the eighth and ninth innings to bring the score to its final of 8-3.
The run in the eighth scored on a bunt from Vega while the run in the ninth was a homer by Jenkins.
GAME TWO
SAU got out to the early lead in the second game, scoring a pair of runs in each of the first two innings. The Wonder Boys cut the deficit in half with a pair of runs of their own in the top of the third.
The first run that inning scored on a RBI groundout by
Zack Burrow while the second saw
Cole Dawson score on a wild pitch.
SAU responded with a third-straight two-run inning, pushing their lead out to 6-2.
Kirby Jenkins picked up a RBI in the fifth with a double, but SAU tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth to bring the score to its eventual final of 7-3.
UP NEXT
The Wonder Boys will now prepare for a road midweek game at Ouachita Baptist this coming Tuesday. First-pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
