RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – The Arkansas Tech softball team began their three-game weekend series at home against No. 10-ranked Southern Arkansas on Friday night and the Golden Suns came close to the upset, narrowly falling by a score of 6-4.
The game was scoreless until the top of the third when SAU scored a run. The Golden Suns answered right back with a run of their own in the bottom of the frame.
Anna Winkfield was responsible for that run as she singled up the middle to score
Miya Curry, who led the inning off with a walk.
The Golden Suns and starting pitcher,
Aly White then worked around a leadoff triple in the top of the fourth to keep it a 1-all tie. In the bottom of the inning,
Destiney Madewell was hit-by-a-pitch. After being sacrificed over to second on a bunt by
Caroline Wilhelm, Madewell trotted home as
Riley Drake hit a two-run home run out to left field.
SAU got a run back in the top of the fifth to make it a 3-2 game. In the sixth, the Muleriders struck for three runs to go up 5-3. Tech was able to score a run of their own in their half of the sixth to make it a one-run game.
In the seventh, SAU tacked on a run of insurance, bringing the score to its final of 6-4.
The Golden Suns and Muleriders will now play a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon to decide the series. The twin-bill is slated for a noon start.
