Wonder Boys sweep doubleheader to sweep the series at Northwestern Oklahoma

ALVA, Okla. – The Arkansas Tech baseball team took both ends of Saturday's doubleheader at Northwestern Oklahoma, giving them a three-game sweep. The Wonder Boys won the first game 8-5 and the second game 7-2.

GAME ONE
In the opener, the Wonder Boys got down 3-0 as the Rangers scored three runs in the bottom of the third. Tech would answer right back and flip the scoreboard to a three-run lead in their favor as they scored six runs on three hits in the top of the fourth.

Tyler Sardelli led the inning off with a walk. Derek Rockett then reached on a fielding error by the second baseman. A walk to Weston Johnston loaded the bases. Levi Martin then singled to left, scoring Sardelli and Rockett. Two batters later, Brendyn Bard hit a sacrifice fly to push across the third run.

After the second out was made, the Rangers went to the bullpen for a left-hander to face the left-handed hitting Tommy Caya. Caya would win the matchup as he dropped a two-run single to left. He then scored in the next at-bat on a single up the middle from Kirby Jenkins.

Two innings later, the Wonder Boys added two more runs to go up 8-3. Caya and Jenkins were responsible for both runs Caya had a RBI single while Jenkins had a RBI groundout.

The Rangers answered in their half of the sixth with two runs themselves, making it a three-run game.

The Wonder Boys would get great pitching out of their bullpen over the final three innings as those three runs held up. Austin Moccardini handled the seventh and eighth innings and retired all six batters faced with one strikeout. Eric Woodley came on for the ninth and allowed no runs on just one hit as he secured his third save of the season.

GAME TWO
In the second game of the day, the Wonder Boys struck first in a big way, scoring five runs on one hit. That one hit was a grand slam by Kirby Jenkins. Prior to that, the Wonder Boys scored their first run of the inning in Tyler Sardelli's at-bat as he reached on an error by the NWOSU third baseman. On that play, Tommy Caya scored.

The Rangers scored their only two runs of the game in the bottom of the third. Tech got one of those runs back in the next half inning on a solo home run by Sardelli. They would go on to add their seventh and final run in the top of the seventh on a fielder's choice RBI for Drew Vega.
