Homecoming Heartbreak; Wonder Boys roar back in second half, fall late to East Central

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – Homecoming 2026 was an absolute roller coaster of emotions that ultimately ended in heartbreak for the Arkansas Tech football team as they lost to East Central, 58-56.

After facing an 18-point halftime deficit, 38-20, the Wonder Boys stormed back to take a one-point lead, 56-55, with just over a minute and a half left in regulation, and then, after East Central kicked a go-ahead field goal with 10 seconds left, had a chance at a 54-yard game-winning field goal as time expired, but the attempt swung wide left.

Overall, the Wonder Boys and Tigers combined for over 1,000 yards of total offense and 114 points.

The Wonder Boys totaled 502 yards of offense with 361 of those yards coming on the ground. The total offense was the most since the Wonder Boys put up 542 yards against Southern Nazarene last season, while the rushing yards are the most in a game since 2022 when the Wonder Boys racked up 339 yards on the ground against Northwestern Oklahoma.

Pacing that rushing attack for the Wonder Boys was Russellville native Tracy Daniels. He would rush for 175 yards on 19 carries and found the endzone four times. The four rushing touchdowns are tied for the second-most in a game at Tech with the most-recent being done by Braden Stringer against Southeastern Oklahoma in 2017.

First-year tailback Kollin Robinson was another key cog in the rushing attack as he went for 104 yards on 12 carries and scored his first collegiate touchdown.

The furious aforementioned comeback effort by the Wonder Boys started on the initial possession of the third quarter. On that drive, the Wonder Boys put together a methodical 12-play, 69-yard drive that ate up the first 6:23 of third quarter clock, capping it with a one-yard touchdown rush by Renaldrick Myles. After an unsuccessful two-point try to make it a 10-point, the score was now 38-26.

The Wonder Boys then forced the game's first punt, making the Tigers go 3-and-out. Five plays later, the Wonder Boys scored a touchdown to pull within five points, 38-33. That touchdown was Daniels' third of the game and went for 31 yards.

East Central then scored 10-straight points to go up by 15, 48-33, with 14:27 to go in the fourth quarter.

Tech had a quick answer on their ensuing possession as Daniels broke free for a 74-yard rushing touchdown to make it an eight-point game, 48-40, with 13:46 left. The Wonder Boys then got a major momentum swing as Jackson Jennings picked off ECU quarterback Sergio Kennedy at the ECU 40-yardline and then returned it 25 yards down to the Tigers' 15-yardline. Four plays later, Carter Hensley threw a 19-yard touchdown to JD DeCausmaker. The Wonder Boys would go for two points once more, this time being successful on a rush by Omyry Hickson, tying the game at 48-all, with 9:59 left.

East Central marched down the field on their next possession and scored a touchdown after falling on a fumbled ball in the endzone. That gave the Tigers a 55-48 lead with 5:37 left.

The Wonder Boys then worked the clock and scored a touchdown of their own with 1:34 left. That drive was nine plays, 64 yards and was capped on a three-yard run by Jamarcus Sandidge. The Wonder Boys chose to once more go for a two-point conversion with eyes on taking their first lead of the game, and the try was successful as Hensley found Trey Nelson all alone in the back of the endzone.

Now trailing for the first time in the game, the Tigers quickly got the ball into Tech territory and into the redzone with 36 seconds left. The Tigers managed to get as close the ATU 9-yardline before setting up for a go-ahead 26-yard field goal attempt. The try was good, giving ECU a 58-56 lead with just 10 seconds left.

Despite time not being on their side and no timeouts, the Wonder Boys went from their 39-yardline to start the drive to the ECU 39-yardline on a 22-yard pass from Hensley to Scout Brazeal. That put the Wonder Boys in position to attempt a potential game-winning field goal from 54 yards out. The try went wide left, however, and Tech suffered the heartbreaking loss.

The Wonder Boys will now prepare to bounce back next with a second-straight home game. This time, Tech will take on Southern Arkansas. Kick-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. from Simmons Bank Field at Thone Stadium.
