RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – With the series in hand after Friday's doubleheader win against Arkansas-Monticello, the Arkansas Tech softball team looked for the sweep on Saturday, but were unable to secure it as UAM won the finale, 7-4.
The Cotton Blossoms were the first to score a run in the top of the first. In the third, the lineup rolled back around for Tech and they plated two runs on two hits to take a 2-1 lead.
Sadie Turner led the frame off with a single to left-centerfield and was then pinch-ran for by
Brooklyn Haney. After a flyout, Haney stole second to move into scoring position. She then took third on what was ball four to
Anna Winkfield.
Not long into the next at-bat, Winkfield swiped second to put two runners in scoring position. That move was cashed in quickly thereafter as
Savannah Snow singled up the middle to score Haney and Winkfield.
The Golden Suns added a run in the fourth on a RBI groundout by
Maycie Hardy to take a 3-1 lead. UAM got that run back in the top of the fifth, but the Golden Suns again went up by two thanks to a RBI groundout from
Caroline Wilhelm.
UAM then struck for five runs on three hits in the top of the seventh to flip a two-run deficit into a three-run lead, 7-4. The Golden Suns would threaten in their half of the sixth and brought the potential tying run to the plate with no outs after the first two batters,
Aly White and Hardy reached. Unfortunately, UAM was able to get the next three outs in succession to stave off the threat.
In the seventh, the Golden Suns again would have the potential tying run at the plate, but were unable to score as UAM secured the win to salvage a game in the series.
