RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – The Arkansas Tech softball team put the finishing touches on their second-straight series sweep as they beat Ouachita Baptist 7-5 in the finale on Friday.
The Golden Suns have now won eight-straight games and will take that winning streak on the road this coming Tuesday where they will take on top-10 ranked Rogers State in a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
In their final game against Ouachita, the Golden Suns fell behind early as the Tigers scored a run in the top of the second. Tech was able to get that run back plus two more in their half of the inning thanks to a three-run home run off the bat of
Lexi Gorniak.
Prior to Gorniak's homer, the Golden Suns had got consecutive singles from
Sharlee Jackson and
Savannah Snow.
Ouachita then scored a run in the next half inning to get within a run of Tech, 3-2. The Golden Suns were swift in their response once more as they scored three more runs on four hits in the bottom of the third to push their lead out to four runs, 6-2.
Kacie Gibbins led that inning off with an infield single to short.
Anna Winkfield then drove in Gibbins on a line drive double into the left-centerfield gap.
Maycie Hardy kept the hit parade going in the next at-bat with a chopping single to third that moved Winkfield to third. On that play, Hardy took second base as well with aggressive base running.
Caroline Wilhelm then had a bunt single RBI back to the pitcher for the second run of the inning. The third and final run of the third was a sac fly by Snow.
The Tigers pushed across a run in the fifth but were matched by the Golden Suns in the sixth on a Winkfield RBI single to right. That run of insurance proved to be needed as Ouachita rallied in the top of the seventh, scoring twice and having the potential tying run on base before Tech reliever
Bradi Basler was able to get out of the inning and secure her first save of the season.
