KICKING OFF
The Arkansas Tech football team remains at home this week for its second-straight game at Simmons Bank Field at Thone Stadium as they host Southeastern Oklahoma. The Wonder Boys will be looking to get back on track against Southeastern Oklahoma after Tech lost this past week to Arkansas-Monticello.
 
Kick-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. and will feature the public introduction of the members of the 2025 ATU Athletic Hall of Fame at the quarter break between the first and second quarters and at halftime.
 
THE SERIES      
This will be the 25th meeting all-time between Tech and Southeastern in a series that dates back to 1957. Overall, the series is led by Tech 16-7-1. Since becoming conference rivals as charter members of the Great American Conference in 2011, the Wonder Boys lead the series 9-4. In games played in Russellville, Tech holds a 10-2-1 lead in the series.
 
TECH(NICALLY) SPEAKING
LAST GAME
The Wonder Boys were tripped up for their first loss of the season this past Saturday at home against Arkansas-Monticello. Tech would fall behind 13-0 through the first quarter, but were in the lead early in the third. UAM would go on to score 18 points in the fourth quarter to overtake the Wonder Boys for the upset win.
 
SCOUTING THE OFFENSE
Through four games, the Wonder Boys are averaging 32.0 points per game and 366.0 yards of total offense. Their ppg average ranks third in the GAC, while their total offense is seventh. Through the air, Tech is averaging 187.5 yards per game to rank seventh in the GAC. On the ground, the Wonder Boys are rushing for 178.5 yards per game to rank seventh.
 
Jack Dawson, Carter Hensley and Dominic Feliciano have all taken snaps at QB for the Wonder Boys, but Dawson has been the starter and primary signal-caller. He is 49-for-89 with 706 yards and seven touchdowns. Hensley is 4-for-6 for 44 yards in limited appearances. Feliciano has only run the ball when in at QB and has carried it 12 times and has three touchdowns.
 
On the ground, the Wonder Boys have had nine different ball carriers. Freshman Bryson Roland currently leads the team in yards with 390. He has three of the team's eight rushing touchdowns. Quarterbacks Dawson and Feliciano account for the remaining five rushing scores for Tech with Feliciano having three and Dawson, two.
 
In terms of receiving, Tech has had 13 players with at least one reception. Jared Long leads the team in receptions so far with 11 and is the leader in receiving yards with 179. Long also has the most touchdown receptions with two. Carldell Sirmons, Tracy Daniels, Austin Marshall, Bryson Roland and Cam McFarlin have the other receiving touchdowns.
 
SCOUTING THE DEFENSE
Defensively the Wonder Boys are allowing 354.5 yards of total offense per game and 16.0 points against per game. Their total defense ranks sixth in the GAC, while their scoring defense is second.
 
Individually, the Wonder Boys have 11 players with double-digit tackles and two with at least 20 stops. Linebacker Sam Jackson leads the team in overall tackles with 29.0. Israel Whitmore leads the team in sacks with 2.5 and tackles for loss at 4.5.
 
As a team, the Wonder Boys have come away with nine takeaways with six being interceptions and three being fumble recoveries. Julien Lopez, Diego Sanchez and Tyrique Jones are tied for the team-lead in interceptions with two each. Jones also has one of the three fumble recoveries and is joined by Israel Whitmore and Gregor Jones for the other two.
 
SPECIAL TEAMS
In the kicking game, Logan Tymeson has handled all the field goal and point-after-touchdown opportunities thus far. He is 15-of-15 in PATs and 3-of-5 in field goals.
 
Technically, punting has been done by two players, but one of those has been quarterback Dawson, with four pooch punts. Regular punter Angus Greaves has had 15 punts and is averaging 37.4 yards per punt.
 
In the return game, the Wonder Boys have had a rotation of Carldell Sirmons, De'Rion Crooms and Tracy Daniels handle most of the opportunities on kickoffs and punts. Sirmons has had five kickoff returns and is averaging 24.0 yards per return while Daniels has had four and is averaging 18.5 yards per return. Crooms has had two kickoff returns and is averaging 24.0 yards per return. Sirmons has had four punt returns and is averaging 16.3 yards per return.
 
COACH THOMPSON
Roy Thompson enters his first season as head football coach at Arkansas Tech after spending the previous nine at GAC-rival Ouachita Baptist as the Tigers' defensive coordinator. On the coaching staff a total of 12 years at Ouachita, Thompson spent the 2016 and 2017 seasons as the co-Defensive Coordinator before taking over the reins fully starting with the 2018 season. 
 
Over that seven-year stretch (2020 was not played due to COVID-19), Ouachita has had three seasons in which its points allowed per game were under 20.0, ranking it in the top-10 nationally in DII. The other three seasons, the highest points allowed in a season was 20.7 points per game. Over that same stretch, Thompson's defensive unit allowed under 320.0 yards per game four times, ranking in the top-35 nationally.
 
Thompson's time at Ouachita also yielded a ton of championship hardware as well as NCAA postseason experience. Out of the eight seasons played with Thompson on staff, Ouachita won the GAC championship five times and reached the NCAA playoffs each of those seasons as well, with the most recent being in 2024. Of those five conference titles, three saw the Savage Storm go unbeaten in the regular season.
 
KNOW YO FOE
LAST GAME     
Southeastern Oklahoma enters the game against Tech 2-2 on the season and are most-recently coming off a 27-21 win on the road at Southern Nazarene. In that game, Southeastern scored two touchdowns over the final minute of the first half to go up 20-14 at the break. The Savage Storm added a third quarter touchdown and then were able to hold off SNU after their early fourth-quarter score that made it a six-point game.
 
THE COACH     
The Savage Storm are coached by Bo Atterberry, who is in his eighth year overall as the head coach at his alma mater, Southeastern and in the third year of his second stint. Overall, Atterberry is in his 14th season as a head football coach and has a career record of 86-65. In his time at SE, Jackson has put together a record of 45-37.
           
SCOUTING THE OFFENSE          
Offensively, the Savage Storm have the sixth-ranked scoring offense in the GAC at 26.5 ppg and the fourth-ranked total offense with an average of 385.3 ypg. Through the air, the Savage Storm are averaging 179.8 ypg to rank eighth in the GAC. On the ground, Southeastern is averaging 205.5 ypg to rank fourth in the GAC.
 
The leading rusher thus far is quarterback Levay Duncan with 302 yards gained on 49 carries. Duncan also leads the team in total carries with 49 and has one of the team's seven rushing scores. The second-leading rusher in attempts and yards is DJ Brown. Brown has 138 yards on 44 carries and leads the team in touchdowns with three.
 
Duncan, Luke Hohenberger and Colton Howard have all taken snaps at QB for the Savage Storm, but Duncan has been the starter and primary signal-caller. He is 38-for-83 with 483 yards and five touchdowns. He also has four interceptions. Hohenberger is 8-for-12 for 156 yards and one touchdown in one appearance. Howard is 10-for-14 for 80 yards and a touchdown in limited opportunities.
 
Southeastern has four receivers up over 100 yards on the season and are led by Kobe Jennings with 169 yards on eight receptions. Jennings also has the most receiving touchdowns on the team with two. Five other Savage Storm have at least one touchdown catch.
 
SCOUTING THE DEFENSE          
Defensively, the Savage Storm rank seventh in scoring defense at 27.5 ppg. Their total defense ranks third in the GAC allowing 305.8 ypg of total offense by their opponents. Through the air, Southeastern ranks 6th in the GAC at 175.3 average ypg allowed. On the ground, the Savage Storm allow an average of 130.5 ypg and rank fourth in the GAC.
 
Individually, Southeastern has had eight players record double-digit tackles and three with at least 15 stops. They are led Andrew Grissom with 26.0. A total of 14 players have accounted for at least 0.5 tackles for lost yardage with Josh Johnson leading the way with 5.0. Johnson also leads the team in sacks with 2.5.
 
The Savage Storm' defense has forced eight turnovers through four games with six of the takeaways being interceptions and two being fumble recoveries. Kamron Fields leads the team interceptions with two while Trevion Butler and Solomon Macfoy have a fumble recovery each.
