TIPPING OFF
The Arkansas Tech men's basketball team is set to play its final home game of the season on Thursday night and will do so against Henderson State.
 
This will be the 180th meeting all-time between Arkansas Tech and Henderson State in a series that dates back to 1930. Overall, Henderson holds a 93-86 lead in the series. Since the two became charter members of the GAC prior to the 2011-12 season, the Wonder Boys are 11-13 against Henderson State.
 
This will be the second game between the Wonder Boys and Reddies this season. They met in Arkadelphia back on December 9. Tech won that initial meeting, 68-65.
 
Tip-off for Thursday night's game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. from Tucker Coliseum.
 
TECH(NICALLY) SPEAKING
The Wonder Boys are 20-6 overall this season and are 16-4 in the GAC and will be in the field of eight for the upcoming GAC Tournament as they are currently second place in the standings. Most-recently, the Wonder Boys pushed their winning streak out to five games with a 70-63 win on the road at Northwestern Oklahoma this past Saturday.
 
Statistically, the Wonder Boys average 74.0 ppg and rank fifth in the GAC. On the defensive end of the court, the Wonder Boys rank first in the league in scoring defense, giving up an average of 65.2 ppg. In terms of field goal percentage and field goal percentage defense, the Wonder Boys are fourth in the conference as they shoot at an overall clip of .466 (683-of-1,467) and limit their opponents to a .425 mark (566-of-1,332) to rank first.
 
From beyond-the-arc, the Wonder Boys shoot at a clip of .401 (231-of-576) to rank first in the GAC while their opponents make three-pointers at a mark of .356 (175-of-491) to rank ninth. From the free throw line, the Wonder Boys shoot .704 as a team (326-of-463) to rank sixth.
 
Individually, the Wonder Boys have three players averaging double figures in scoring and are led by Taelon Peter and his 20.6 ppg. Cassius Brooks and Tommy Kamarad are next in scoring at 12.1 ppg and 11.5 ppg, respectively.
 
Josh Mitchell is the team-leader in rebounding and is averaging 6.1 rebounds per game. In terms of assists, Kade Shaffer leads the team and is averaging 4.8 assists per game.
 
Defensively, the Wonder Boys are led in steals by Peter at 1.9 steals per game and in blocks by Mitchell at 1.7 blocks per game.
 
The Wonder Boys are coached by Mark Downey, who is in his fourth season back on the sidelines at Tech after a 10-year hiatus. In his first stint, Downey patrolled the sidelines at Tech for four seasons from 2006-07 - 2009-10. In his final season, Downey guided the Wonder Boys to a program-record 30 wins and during that season, the Wonder Boys were ranked No. 1 in NCAA DII for the first time ever.
 
In his time at Tech, which is now in its eighth season overall, Downey has amassed a 130-93 record. Overall, Downey is in his 17th season as a head coach and has career record of 296-199.
 
SCOUTING THE REDDIES
Henderson State is 8-17 overall this season and are 7-13 in GAC play and are currently 11th place in the standings. The Reddies are coming off a 93-68 loss on the road at Southeastern Oklahoma in their most-recent game on Saturday.
 
Statistically, the Reddies average 78.2 ppg and rank second in the GAC. On the defensive end of the court, the Reddies rank 12th in the league in scoring defense, giving up an average of 78.3 ppg. In terms of field goal percentage and field goal percentage defense, the Reddies are second in the conference as they shoot at an overall clip of .471 (726-of-1,540) and limit their opponents to a .449 mark (691-of-1,539) to rank fifth.
 
From beyond-the-arc, the Reddies shoot at a clip of .346 (141-of-407) to rank seventh in the GAC while their opponents make three-pointers at a mark of .348 (216-of-621) to rank fifth. From the free throw line, the Reddies shoot .696 as a team (362-of-520) to rank seventh.
 
Individually, the Reddies have three players averaging double figures in scoring and are led by Zyon Patterson and his 15.5 ppg. Malek Davis is next at 13.9 ppg while Tomislav Miholjcic rounds out double-figure scoring at 11.4 ppg.
 
Miholjcic is the team-leader in rebounding and is averaging 7.8 rebounds per game. In terms of assists, Davis leads the team and is averaging 4.1 assists per game.
 
Defensively, the Reddies are led in steals by Davis at 1.5 steals per game and in blocks by Patterson at 0.8 blocks per game.
 
The Reddies are coached by Jimmy Elgas, who is in his ninth season as head coach at Henderson State. In his time at HSU, Elgas has amassed a 131-118 record and led the Reddies to a GAC Tournament Championship in 2020.
