TIPPING OFF
The Arkansas Tech men's basketball team is set to go on their longest overall road trip of the season this weekend with stops in Weatherford and Alva for a pair of conference games. First up is a Thursday night game at Southwestern Oklahoma.
 
This will be the 40th meeting all-time between Arkansas Tech and Southwestern Oklahoma in a series that dates back to the 1980-81 season. Overall, Tech leads the series, 25-14. Since the two became conference foes within the GAC prior to the 2011-12 season, the Wonder Boys are 20-6 against SWOSU.
 
This will be the second game between the Wonder Boys and Bulldogs this season. They met in Russellville back on January 20. Tech won that initial meeting, 82-74.
 
Tip-off for Thursday evening's game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. from the Pioneer Cellular Event Center in Weatherford.
 
TECH(NICALLY) SPEAKING
The Wonder Boys are 18-6 overall this season and are 14-4 in the GAC and will be in the field of eight for the upcoming GAC Tournament as they are currently second place in the standings. Most-recently, the Wonder Boys pushed their winning streak out to three games with a convincing 72-56 win on the road at Ouachita Baptist this past Saturday afternoon.
 
Statistically, the Wonder Boys average 74.8 ppg and rank fifth in the GAC. On the defensive end of the court, the Wonder Boys rank first in the league in scoring defense, giving up an average of 66.2 ppg. In terms of field goal percentage and field goal percentage defense, the Wonder Boys are second in the conference as they shoot at an overall clip of .472 (639-of-1,354) and limit their opponents to a .431 mark (532-of-1,233) to rank first.
 
From beyond-the-arc, the Wonder Boys shoot at a clip of .403 (216-of-536) to rank first in the GAC while their opponents make three-pointers at a mark of .361 (164-of-454) to rank 10th. From the free throw line, the Wonder Boys shoot .701 as a team (300-of-428) to rank sixth.
 
Individually, the Wonder Boys have three players averaging double figures in scoring and are led by Taelon Peter and his 20.6 ppg. Tommy Kamarad and Cassius Brooks are next in scoring at 12.1 ppg and 12.0 ppg, respectively.
 
Josh Mitchell is the team-leader in rebounding and is averaging 6.1 rebounds per game. In terms of assists, Kade Shaffer leads the team and is averaging 4.9 assists per game.
 
Defensively, the Wonder Boys are led in steals by Peter at 2.0 steals per game and in blocks by Mitchell at 1.8 blocks per game.
 
The Wonder Boys are coached by Mark Downey, who is in his fourth season back on the sidelines at Tech after a 10-year hiatus. In his first stint, Downey patrolled the sidelines at Tech for four seasons from 2006-07 - 2009-10. In his final season, Downey guided the Wonder Boys to a program-record 30 wins and during that season, the Wonder Boys were ranked No. 1 in NCAA DII for the first time ever.
 
In his time at Tech, which is now in its eighth season overall, Downey has amassed a 128-93 record. Overall, Downey is in his 17th season as a head coach and has career record of 294-199.
 
SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS
Southwestern Oklahoma is 8-15 overall this season and are 8-10 in GAC play and are currently tied for sixth place in the league standings. The Bulldogs have lost their last two games with both coming on the road last week at Northwestern Oklahoma and Southeastern Oklahoma.
 
Statistically, the Bulldogs average 67.8 ppg and rank 11th in the GAC. On the defensive end of the court, the Bulldogs rank seventh in the league in scoring defense, giving up an average of 72.0 ppg. In terms of field goal percentage and field goal percentage defense, the Bulldogs are 10th in the conference as they shoot at an overall clip of .439 (546-of-1,245) and limit their opponents to a .442 mark (593-of-1,341) to rank third.
 
From beyond-the-arc, the Bulldogs shoot at a clip of .321 (134-of-418) to rank 10th in the GAC while their opponents make three-pointers at a mark of .330 (159-of-482) to rank third. From the free throw line, the Bulldogs shoot .686 as a team (334-of-487) to rank ninth.
 
Individually, the Bulldogs have two players averaging double figures in scoring and are led by Ben Smith and his 18.0 ppg. Jalen Johnson is next and rounds out double-figure scoring at 12.7 ppg.
 
Mark Berry is the team-leader in rebounding and is averaging 7.1 rebounds per game. In terms of assists, MJ Warrior leads the team and is averaging 3.8 assists per game.
 
Defensively, the Bulldogs are led in steals by Warrior at 1.3 steals per game and in blocks by Smith at 0.6 blocks per game.
 
The Bulldogs are coached by Brett Weiberg, who is in his first season as head coach at Southwestern Oklahoma and his sixth overall. At SWOSU, Weiberg is 8-15 and is 55-108 for his career.
