CLEVELAND, Miss. – Former conference opponents Arkansas Tech and Delta State met on the diamond on Tuesday night for the first of two mid-week non-conference games. Tuesday night's affair at Delta State played out as a low-scoring pitcher's duel that was ultimately won by DSU by a score of 2-1.
Both runs for the Statesmen (13-13) scored in the bottom of the second inning and came as a result of a two-out, two-run home run. The Wonder Boys (19-8) scored their lone run of the game in the top of the fourth on a two-out RBI single by
Brandon Bunton.
Outside of those two combined scoring plays, stellar pitching was on full display for both teams.
Both starters pitched six complete innings with DSU's starter getting to the seventh before being lifted for a reliever.
Ethan Fritz made the start for the Wonder Boys and allowed just four hits and struck out a season-high seven batters in 6.0 innings of work.
Jordan Muschalek was first in relief and pitched 0.2 innings and allowed just one hit.
Will Horton had the final 1.1 innings for Tech and retired all four batters faced, striking out two.
Delta State also used two relievers with Logan Cromer pitching 1.0 innings and Josh Hill handling the final 1.2 innings to register his third save of the season.
The Wonder Boys and Statesmen are scheduled to play the second game of their two-game mid-week series on Wednesday. First-pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. from Cleveland, Miss.
