HOUSTON, Texas – The Arkansas Tech baseball team wrapped up their opening weekend of action at the annual Houston Winter Invitational on Sunday evening against No. 36-ranked Montevallo. Tech would be shutout in the finale, 15-0.
After neither team scored in the first inning, Montevallo started their scoring in the top of the second inning with a pair of runs on two hits. The second of their hits that inning was the one that did the damage as the Falcons (3-0) scored a pair of runs on a two-out double just down the right field line.
The Wonder Boys would threaten offensively in the bottom of the second as they loaded the bases with one out.
Logan Schwenke led that frame off with a solid single to centerfield. Two batters later,
Cade McBride doubled down the left field line to move Schwenke to third.
Luke Ray then drew a walk to load the bases.
The threat was quickly extinguished, however as the Wonder Boys grounded into an inning-ending double play.
Montevallo then completely secured the momentum in the top of the third inning as they took advantage of a two-out Tech error and proceeded to score six runs following the miscue.
A quiet bottom of the third by the Wonder Boys gave way to another big offensive inning in the next frame for the Falcons as they struck for seven runs on five hits.
That would be the final offensive production for either team as the fifth, sixth and seventh innings went scoreless.
The Wonder Boys will now prepare for a four-game weekend series against nationally-ranked Central Missouri. The series is scheduled to start on Friday, February 10 with a single game at 3 p.m. followed by a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 2 p.m. and the finale on Sunday 1 p.m.
