Tipping Off
The conference portion of the 2022-23 regular season slate for the Arkansas Tech women's basketball team is at the mid point as the Golden Suns continue Great American Conference Play with a 9-4 GAC record and stay tied for third place.
The gauntlet of conference games continues as Tech gets ready to host a pair of home games against East Central and Southeastern Okla. The game against the Tigers will be on Thursday night in Tucker Coliseum and is set for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off. The game against the Savage Storm will be at 1 p.m, on Saturday in Tucker Coliseum.
This will be the second matchup of the season between the two programs and the Golden Suns. The Golden Suns won the first matchup of the season against East Central on the road in a dominant fashion by a score of 87-59 for one of their largest win margins of the season so far this year. Tech also took the road matchup win against Southeastern 57-38.
In the all-time series histories, this will be the 31st matchup against East Central and the 27th matchup against Southeastern. The Golden Suns are 22-9 against ECU and 15-12 against SE all-time.
Tech Tidbits
The Golden Suns continue Great American Conference play with an 11-6 overall record and one of the best conference records at 9-4. In the GAC standings, the Golden Suns are tied for third. In the Golden Suns most recent stretch, they took down both Southwestern Oklahoma State and Northwestern Oklahoma State on the road to head into this weeks slate of games on a two-game win streak.
Statistically, this year, the Golden Suns are averaging 71.6 ppg and rank second in the GAC. On the defensive end of the court, the Golden Suns rank fifth in the league in scoring defense, giving up an average of 64.3 ppg. In terms of field goal percentage and field goal percentage defense, the Golden Suns are fifth in the conference as they shoot at an overall clip of .414 (462-of-1117) and are limiting their opponents to a .354 mark (380-of-1074) to rank first in the GAC.
From beyond-the-arc, the Golden Suns are shooting at a clip of .262 (78-of-298) to rank 12th in the GAC, while their opponents are making three-pointers at a mark of .318 (121-of- 380) to rank eighth. From the free throw line, the Golden Suns are shooting .662 as a team (215-of-325) to rank 11th.
Individually, the Golden Suns have two players averaging double figures in scoring. Jalei Oglesby leads the way at 19.2 ppg, which is the third best scoring average in the GAC. Oglesby has proven to be one of the most efficient scorers in the GAC this season hitting her shots from field goal range at a high clip of .529 (136-of-257), which is the second best mark in the conference. On top of her scoring, Oglesby also resides within the top ten in the conference in rebounds (4th), free throw percentage (9th) and offensive rebounds (2nd). Kaley Shipman has also provided a big lift as the other double figure scorer for the Golden Suns at 12.7 ppg.
The Golden Suns are coached by Dave Wilbers, who is in his 16th season on the sidelines at Tech. A member of the 300-career win club, Wilbers has a career record of 339--114.
Overall in his time at Tech, Wilbers has kept the Golden Suns as perennial contenders in the GAC, the region and the nation, winning 20 or more games nine times, capturing seven conference regular championships, five conference tournament championships and advancing to nine NCAA Regional Tournaments.
Scouting the Tigers
East Central is 7-10 overall with a 4-9 record in conference play. They have picked up conference wins against Southern Arkansas, Northwestern Oklahoma, Southeastern and Ouachita Baptist.
Statistically this season, the Tigers average 65.8 ppg on offense to rank ninth in the GAC and give up an average of 70.7 ppg to rank tenth in the GAC. In terms of field goal percentages, East Central shoots at a .383 clip overall (371-of-961) to rank tenth in the conference and are allowing opponents to shoot at a mark of .429 (405-of-945) to rank tenth.
From three-point range, the Tigers shoot at a .308 clip (128-of 416) to rank eighth overall in the GAC and are allowing their opponents to shoot .354 (126-of-356) from range to rank last. At the charity stripe, the Tigers shoot .755 (249-of-330) to rank forth in the GAC.
Individually, the Tigers boast two players scoring in double figures and are led by Ashly Evans-Thompson who is scoring 14.5 ppg. Mackenzie Crusoe is the other double figure scorer for the Tigers and is averaging 13.7 ppg.
The Tigers are coached by Heather Hurt (Robben), who is currently serving as the interim head coach for the program. Before serving as the interim head coach for the Tiger's women's basketball program, Hurt (Robben) was hired as the assistant coach for the Tigers.
Scouting the Savage Storm
Southeastern enters Thursday's conference game with a 4-14 overall record and a 2-11 GAC record.
Statistically this season, the Savage Storm average 57.8 ppg on offense to rank 12th in the GAC and give up an average of 64.0 ppg to rank fourth in the GAC. In terms of field goal per-centages, SE shoots at a .388 clip overall (368-of-949) to rank ninth and are allowing opponents to shoot at a mark of .377 (403-of-1068) to rank fourth.
From three-point range, the Savage Storm shoot at a .310 clip (110-of-355) to rank seventh in the GAC and are allowing their opponents to shoot .307 (127-of-414) from range to rank seventh. At the charity stripe, the Savage Storm shoot .760 (196- of-258) to rank third in the GAC.
Individually, the Savage Storm have two players scoring in double figures in Briley Moon who is averaging 16.5 ppg and Caitlyn Kobiske who is averaging 15.1 ppg.
The Savage Storm are coached by Darin Grover, who is in his 18th season at the helm of Southeastern's women's basketball program. He amassed a 235-185 record as the head coach of the Savage Storm in his first 15 full seasons.
