TIPPING OFF
The Arkansas Tech women's basketball team will take a brief pause from Great American Conference play on Tuesday night as they will host Maryville University for a non-conference game.
Tuesday's game is the return of a home-and-home agreement between the two teams that saw the Golden Suns play Maryville on the road last season. The Golden Suns would come out on the losing end as the Saints won 62-59.
Tip-off for the game is scheduled for 3 p.m. from Tucker Coliseum.
TECH(NICALLY) SPEAKING
The Golden Suns are 3-2 overall on the season and are coming off a tightly-contested 63-57 loss at home to Ouachita Baptist this past Saturday afternoon. The loss snapped a modest two-game winning streak for the Golden Suns.
Early on, the Golden Suns average 72.6 ppg and rank fifth in the GAC. On the defensive end of the court, the Golden Suns rank 11th in the league in scoring defense, giving up an average of 65.0 ppg. In terms of field goal percentage and field goal percentage defense, the Golden Suns are fifth in the conference as they shoot at an overall clip of .416 (129-of-310) and are limiting their opponents to a .380 mark (108-of-284) to rank seventh.
From beyond-the-arc, the Golden Suns shoot at a clip of .282 (20-of-71) to rank 10th in the GAC while their opponents make three-pointers at a mark of .279 (29-of-104) to rank sixth. From the free throw line, the Golden Suns shoot .691 as a team (85-of-123) to rank ninth.
Individually, the Golden Suns have three players averaging double figures and two more that are at least at 8.0 ppg.
Pacious McDaniel currently leads the team in scoring at 17.2 ppg. Behind her is
Alex Hill at 15.2 ppg.
Hayleigh Wyrick rounds out double-figure scoring at 10.4 ppg while
Dana Thompson is just off the double-figure average mark at 9.3 ppg.
McDaniel and Thompson are tied for the team-lead in rebounding and are averaging 6.8 rebounds per game. In terms of assists,
Hill leads the team and is averaging 2.4 assists per game.
Defensively, the Golden Suns are led in steals by
McDaniel at 2.2 steals per game and in blocks by
Sarah Edmondson at 0.8 blocks per game.
The Golden Suns are coached by
Dave Wilbers, who is in his 17th season as Tech. During his time at Tech,
Wilbers has amassed a 345-123 overall record. Nine times,
Wilbers has won 20 or more games at Tech and twice has won 30 or more. In terms of national rankings, a
Wilbers-led team has been nationally-ranked at any point in a season 10 times. Among those, he has guided the Golden Suns to the top of the rankings on a pair of occasions during the 2010-11 and 2011-12 seasons.
SCOUTING THE SAINTS
Maryville is 2-6 overall this season and are coming off a 66-53 loss at home to Quincy University this past Saturday. That loss extends Maryville's losing streak to four games. All four of those losses have come in Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) play.
Statistically, the Saints average 62.8 ppg and rank 12th in the GLVC. On the defensive end of the court, the Saints rank fourth in the league in scoring defense, giving up an average of 66.0 ppg. In terms of field goal percentage and field goal percentage defense, the Saints are 10th in the conference as they shoot at an overall clip of .401 (178-of-444) and limit their opponents to a .401 mark (192-of-479) to rank fifth.
From beyond-the-arc, the Saints shoot at a clip of .274 (43-of-157) to rank ninth in the GLVC while their opponents make three-pointers at a mark of .331 (49-of-148) to rank 11th. From the free throw line, the Saints shoot .736 as a team (103-of-140) to rank fifth.
Individually, the Saints have three players averaging double figures in scoring and are led by
Carsyn Fearday and her 1468 ppg. Just off that pace is
Antoinette Mussorici at 14.4 ppg.
Haidyn Pitsch rounds out double-figure scoring at 10.9 ppg.
Karlee Feldman is the team-leader in rebounding and is averaging 8.5 rebounds per game. In terms of assists,
Gracie Stugart leads the team and is averaging 4.0 assists per game.
Defensively, the Saints are led in steals by
Mussorici at 1.6 steals per game and in blocks by
Feldman at 1.5 blocks per game.
The Saints are coached by
Brita Hand, who is in her second season at Maryville as head coach and her fourth overall. At Maryville, Hand has a 17-19 record and carries an overall head coaching record of 51-43.
