TIPPING OFF
The Arkansas Tech men's basketball team is set to hit the road for one final game prior to the Thanksgiving holiday and will do so in Tyler, Texas where they will take on UT Tyler in a non-conference game on Wednesday, November 22.
 
Wednesday's game is the return of a home-and-home agreement between the two teams that saw the Wonder Boys play UT Tyler at home last season. The Wonder Boys would come out on the losing end of a defensive battle as the Patriots won 56-49.
 
Tip-off for the game is scheduled for 7 p.m. from the Patriot Center.
TECH(NICALLY) SPEAKING
The Wonder Boys are off to a 1-2 start to their season and are coming off a 75-72 win in their most-recent game played last Thursday at home against Drury. In that game, the Wonder Boys raced out to a big lead in the first half, but were forced to hold off a furious second half rally by Drury.
 
Statistically, the Wonder Boys average 67.7 ppg and rank ninth in the GAC. On the defensive end of the court, the Wonder Boys rank seventh in the league in scoring defense, giving up an average of 74.7 ppg. In terms of field goal percentage and field goal percentage defense, the Wonder Boys are 10th in the conference as they shoot at an overall clip of .421 (75-of-178) and limit their opponents to a .480 mark (72-of-150) to rank seventh.
 
From beyond-the-arc, the Wonder Boys shoot at a clip of .355 (22-of-62) to rank fifth in the GAC while their opponents make three-pointers at a mark of .359 (23-of-64) to rank 11th. From the free throw line, the Wonder Boys shoot .608 as a team (31-of-51) to rank 10th.
 
Individually, the Wonder Boys have four players averaging double figures in scoring and are led by Taelon Peter and his 13.7 ppg. Cassius Brooks is next in scoring at 13.0 pgg while Seybian Sims and Josh Mitchell round out double-figure scoring at 12.0 ppg and 11.3 ppg, respectively.
 
Sims is also the team-leader in rebounding and is averaging 6.5 rebounds per game. In terms of assists, Brooks leads the team and is averaging 3.3 assists per game.
 
Defensively, the Wonder Boys are led in steals by Peter at 3.0 steals per game and in blocks by Mitchell at 1.7 blocks per game.
 
The Wonder Boys are coached by Mark Downey, who is in his fourth season back on the sidelines at Tech after a 10-year hiatus. In his first stint, Downey patrolled the sidelines at Tech for four seasons from 2006-07 - 2009-10. In his final season, Downey guided the Wonder Boys to a program-record 30 wins and during that season, the Wonder Boys were ranked No. 1 in NCAA DII for the first time ever.
 
In his time at Tech, which is now in its eighth season overall, Downey has amassed a 111-89 record. Overall, Downey is in his 17th season as a head coach and has career record of 277-195.
SCOUTING THE PATRIOTS
UT Tyler is off to a 1-2 start to their season as well and are also coming off a win in their most-recent game. That win was an 87-62 victory at home against Dallas Christian College this past Monday. Prior to that, the Patriots had close games with Western Colorado and Northeastern State.
 
Statistically, the Patriots average 69.0 ppg and rank 15th in the Lone Star Conference (LSC). On the defensive end of the court, the Patriots rank third in the league in scoring defense, giving up an average of 65.7 ppg. In terms of field goal percentage and field goal percentage defense, the Patriots are 15th in the conference as they shoot at an overall clip of .416 (82-of-197) and limit their opponents to a .391 mark (66-of-169) to rank first.
 
From beyond-the-arc, the Patriots shoot at a clip of .242 (16-of-66) to rank 16th in the LSC while their opponents make three-pointers at a mark of .394 (26-of-66) to rank 15th. From the free throw line, the Patriots shoot .600 as a team (27-of-45) to rank 16th.
 
Individually, the Patriots have three players averaging double figures in scoring and are led by Bryce Roberts and his 14.5 ppg. Jonathan Jackson is next in scoring at 12.3 pgg while Khalik Gardner rounds out double-figure scoring at 11.0 ppg.
 
Alec Zambie is the team-leader in rebounding and is averaging 7.7 rebounds per game. In terms of assists, Zambie and Terrell Wilson lead the team and are averaging 2.3 assists per game.
 
Defensively, the Patriots are led in steals by Wilson and Jonathan Jackson at 1.3 steals per game and in blocks by Donta Dawson Jr. at 1.3 blocks per game.
 
The Patriots are coached by Tim Moser, who is in his first season as head coach at UT Tyler. A long-time coach, Moser's career started in 1993-04 as an assistant coach at Southern Utah. Prior to becoming head men's basketball coach at UT Tyler, Moser was in the building serving as the associate head coach for the women's program. All told, Moser has 16 years of head coaching experience with 10 coming at the juco ranks and six as the women's head coach at Alaska-Anchorage.
