WEATHERFORD, Okla. - The Arkansas Tech Women's basketball team falls to Southwestern Oklahoma State 59-90 on the road. The Golden Suns drop to 13-11 overall with a 10-10 record among Great American Conference opponents.
Leading the game for the Golden Suns was senior guardÂ
Jayana Sanders with 20 points, four rebounds, two assists, two blocks and a steal. Closing out the leaders for Tech was junior forward
Nikki Metcalfe with eight points, five boards, an assist, two blocks and a steal.
The Golden Suns struck first to open the game as Metcalfe quickly sunk a jumper to take an early 2-0 lead over the Bulldogs. A two point jumper from Sanders and another basket from Metcalfe would put Tech up 8-5 with 7:14 left in the first quarter of play.
Southwestern Oklahoma would tie things up at ten points a piece with a jumper. The Bulldogs would also go 2-2 from the line and hit a triple to take a 15-12 with 5:23 left in the opening quarter of action. Sanders would the Golden Suns a 17-15 lead connecting on a shot from beyond the arc. A jumper from Metclafe would help them hold a 19-17 lead in the final minutes of the first. A pair of good free throws for the Bulldogs would end the first quarter all tied up at 19 heading into the second quarter of play.
Southwestern Oklahoma and Arkansas Tech would start the second trading two pairs of layups to stay tied at 23-23. A bucket from Sanders and a two point jumper from
Tori Lasker would put the Golden Suns on top 28-25 with 5:46 left in the second quarter. Two back-to-back baskets for the Bulldogs would put then ahead 31-30. With 1:50 remaining in the half, Lasker and Metcalfe would hit on back-to-back shots to take back the lead for Tech at 34-33. Southwestern Oklahoma would would get the last two point shot of the half to fall taking a 35-34 lead into the halftime break.
The second half proved to be extremely tough for Tech as Southwestern Oklahoma came out in full throttle controlling every offensive and defensive aspect of the game. The Bulldogs outscored the Golden Suns 31-11 in the third quarter and 24-14 in the fourth quarter to hold Tech to just a 25 point second half, while they more than doubled that with 55 total points in the second half of play to emerge with the 90-59 win over Arkansas Tech.
The Golden Suns will return home to Tucker Coliseum for their next game on Thursday, February 24 for senior night against Henderson State. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. Thursday night in Tucker.
