TIPPING OFF
The fourth of five makeup games is set to be played tonight for the Arkansas Tech men's basketball team as they will be hitting the road to take on Harding in a makeup from an previously-postponed game back on January 13.
For the Wonder Boys, they will be looking to sweep the season series with Harding as they won the initial meeting between the two 68-63 less than a week ago back on February 8.
A win will also keep the Wonder Boys in contention for a berth into the upcoming GAC Basketball Tournament where the top-eight teams in the standings will vie for the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Entering play tonight, the Wonder Boys sit in 10th place in the standings, but are just one game back in the win column for a tie for the eighth and final spot in the tournament.
TECH TIDBITS
The Wonder Boys enter play for this make up game 8-14 overall and are 5-11 in the Great American Conference. The Wonder Boys are coming off consecutive close losses at home to Oklahoma Baptist and Southern Nazarene.
So far this year, the Wonder Boys are averaging 69.2 ppg and rank ninth in the GAC. On the defensive end of the court, the Wonder Boys rank fifth in the league in scoring defense, giving up an average of 68.0 ppg. In terms of field goal percentage and field goal percentage defense, the Wonder Boys are seventh in the conference as they shoot at an overall clip of .450 (593-of- 1,318) and are limiting their opponents to a .425 mark (528-of- 1,242 to rank fourth.
From beyond-the-arc, the Wonder Boys are shoot at a clip of .347 (165-of-475) to rank fourth in the GAC while their opponents are making three-pointers at a mark of .337 (155-of-460) to rank seventh. From the free throw line, the Wonder Boys are shooting .667 as a team (172-of-258) to rank 11th.
Individually, the Wonder Boys have two players averaging double figures in scoring. Tony Hall leads the way at 12.8 ppg while Cameron Kennedy rounds out double-figure scoring with an even 10.0 ppg. The Wonder Boys are also pretty balanced in their scoring with three other players averaging at least 8.0 ppg.
The Wonder Boys are coached by Mark Downey, who is in his second season back on the sidelines at Tech after a 10-year hiatus. In his first stint, Downey patrolled the sidelines at Tech for four seasons from 2006-07 - 2009-10. In his final season, Downey guided the Wonder Boys to a program-record 30 wins and during the course of that season, the Wonder Boys were ranked No. 1 in NCAA DII for the first time ever.
In his time at Tech, which is now in its sixth season overall, Downey has amassed a 92-68 record. Overall, Downey is in his 15th season as a head coach and has career record of 258-174.
SCOUTING THE BISONS
Harding enters Monday's makeup game against Arkansas Tech 5-18 overall and 3-14 in league play. The Bison are coming off a 66-63 upset win over league-leading Oklahoma Baptist this past Saturday. Prior to that, the Bisons had lost 10-straight games.
Statistically this season, the Bisons average 69.8 ppg on offense to rank seventh in the GAC and give up an average of 78.9 ppg to rank 12th in the GAC. In terms of field goal percentages, Harding shoots at a .418 clip overall (577-of-1,381) to rank 11th and is allowing opponents to shoot at a mark of .459 (659-of-1,437) to rank 12th.
From three-point range, the Bisons shoot at a .327 clip (186-of- 569) to rank 10th in the GAC and are allowing their opponents to shoot .369 (201-of-544) from range to rank 12th. At the charity stripe, the Bisons shoot .732 (265-of-361) to rank fourth in the GAC.
Individually, the Bisons have three players scoring in double figures and are led by Taylor Currie at 16.9 ppg. Behind Currie is Stetson Smithson at 14.5 ppg. Ramiro Santiago rounds out double-figure scoring at 10.9 ppg.
The Bisons are coached by Jeff Morgan, who is in his 29th season at Harding. In his time at Harding, Morgan has amassed a 439-369 overall record. Overall, he is in his 30th year as a head coach and has a total career record of 456-379. Morgan has led his teams to 21 postseason tournament appearances, including nine Gulf South Conference Tournament appearances and seven GAC Tournament appearances, six NCAA Division II national tournaments and to one NAIA national tournament.
