TIPPING OFF
The non-conference portion of the 2022-23 schedule for the Arkansas Tech men's basketball team is in the books and now the Wonder Boys set their sights on their 22-game Great American Conference slate.

The grueling conference schedule gets under way this weekend as Tech will open at home against Arkansas-Monticello on Thursday night and then travel to Arkadelphia on Saturday to play Ouachita.

Last season, the Wonder Boys split against both UAM and Ouachita, winning the games at home inside Tucker Coliseum, but dropping the road games.

In terms of all-time series histories, this will be the 171st meeting between Tech and UAM and the 179
th meeting against Ouachita. Against UAM, Tech holds a 108-62 lead in the series, but against Ouachita, the Tigers hold a slight 92-86 edge over the Wonder Boys.

Tech Tidbits
The Wonder Boys enter play with a 2-4 record and are on a modest two-game winning streak having beaten Drury 68-61 on the road and Ozarks 67-46 at home.

Statistically, the Wonder Boys are averaging 62.5 ppg and rank 12th in the GAC. On the defensive end of the court, the Wonder Boys rank first in the league in scoring defense, giving up an average of 63.0 ppg. In terms of field goal percentage and field goal percentage defense, the Wonder Boys are 11th in the conference as they shoot at an overall clip of .403 (144-of-357) and limit their opponents to a .402 mark (129-of-321) to rank fifth.

From beyond-the-arc, the Wonder Boys shoot at a clip of .205 (24-of-117) to rank 12th in the GAC while their opponents make three-pointers at a mark of .357 (45-of-126) to rank eighth. From the free throw line, the Wonder Boys shoot .656 as a team (63-of-96) to rank 12th.

Individually, the Wonder Boys have two players averaging double figures in scoring.
Wes Harris and Taelon Peter lead the way at 12.8 ppg each. Three other Wonder Boys average at least 7.5 ppg.

The Wonder Boys are coached by
Mark Downey, who is in his third season back on the sidelines at Tech after a 10-year hiatus. In his first stint, Downey patrolled the sidelines at Tech for four seasons from 2006-07 - 2009-10. In his final season, Downey guided the Wonder Boys to a program-record 30 wins and during that season, the Wonder Boys were ranked No. 1 in NCAA DII for the first time ever.

In his time at Tech, which is now in its seventh season overall, Downey has amassed a 96-76 record. Overall, Downey is in his 16th season as a head coach and has career record of 262-182.

Scouting the Boll Weevils
Arkansas-Monticello is off to a 3-2 start to their season and are on a three-game winning streak. All three of those wins have come against non-Division II competition and have been played at home. The Boll Weevils did take part in one of the Central Region Crossover challenges and took on preseason ranked No. 18 Augustana as well as St. Cloud State. UAM narrowly lost to Augie by a point, but was handled by St. Cloud State.

Statistically, the Boll Weevils are averaging 70.4 ppg on offense to rank ninth in the GAC and are giving up an average of 67.8 ppg to rank fourth in the GAC. In terms of field goal percentages, UAM shoots at a .479 clip overall (128-of-267) to rank fourth in their league and allow opponents to shoot at a mark of .401 (124-of-309) to rank fourth as well.

From three-point range, the Boll Weevils shoot at a .408 clip (40-of-98) to rank second in the GAC and allow opponents to shoot .354 (40-of-113) from range to rank seventh. At the charity stripe, the Boll Weevils shoot .659 (56-of-85) to rank 11th in the GAC.

Individually, the Boll Weevils have four players scoring in double figures and are led by
Edwin Louis at 14.4 ppg.
Mario Fantina is next in scoring at 13.8 ppg followed by
Josh Denton at 10.2 ppg.
Timur Krupalija rounds out double-figure scoring at an even 10.0 ppg.

The Boll Weevils are coached by
Chad Tapp, who is in his second season as head coach at UAM. In his first season, Tapp led the Boll Weevils to an overall record of 10-18 and a 6-16 mark in GAC play. Prior to coming to coming to UAM, Tapp spent eight years as head coach at Lyon College. At Lyon, Tapp won 15 or more games five times and totaled 118 wins. He also had three years as head coach at Indiana-South Bend where he won 47 games. Overall, Tapp has 178 career wins as a head coach.

Scouting the Tigers
Ouachita is off to a 1-2 start to their season and are on a two-game losing streak heading into this weekend of action. Prior to playing Tech on Saturday, Ouachita will have played on the road at Harding on Thursday night.

The lone win thus far for Ouachita came against Arkansas Baptist as the Tigers beat the Buffaloes 72-57.

Statistically, the Tigers are averaging 72.0 ppg on offense to rank eighth in the GAC and are giving up an average of 70.8 ppg to rank 10th in the GAC. In terms of field goal percentages, Ouachita shoots at a .467 clip overall (113-of-242) to rank eighth in their league and allow opponents to shoot at a mark of .461 (107-of-232) to rank 12th.

From three-point range, the Tigers shoot at a .297 clip (22-of-74) to rank ninth in the GAC and allow opponents to shoot .420 (29-of-69) from range to rank 12th. At the charity stripe, the Tigers shoot .727 (40-of-55) to rank seventh in the GAC.

Individually, the Tigers have three players scoring in double figures and are led by
Ma'Darius Hobson at 13.0 ppg.
Reggie Martin is next in scoring at 12.3 ppg.
LaQuan Butler Jr. rounds out double-figure scoring at 11.7 ppg. Two other Tigers are averaging at least 8.0 ppg.

The Tigers are coached by
Dennis Nutt, who is in his 13th season as head coach at Ouachita. In his time at Ouachita, Nutt has won 15 or more games four times and has totaled 146 wins. Prior to coming to Ouachita, Nutt had six seasons as head coach at Texas State from 2000-01 – to – 2005-06. At Texas State, Nutt won 72 games. Overall, Nutt has 218 career wins as a head coach.
