TIPPING OFF
The Arkansas Tech men's basketball team is set to hit the road prior to the Thanksgiving holiday later this week and will take part in the two-day Drury Invitational.
 
The Wonder Boys will begin their time at the Drury Invitational on Tuesday afternoon against William Jewell College. Tip-off for that game is scheduled for 3:15 p.m. A day later, the Wonder Boys will play a primetime game against Drury with tip-off against the Panthers scheduled for 7:45 p.m.
 
This will be the fifth meeting all-time between Tech and William Jewell. Tech as won all four previous games with the most-recent coming back in November 2018. In the series with Drury, it will be the 26th meeting all-time and the first since November 2012. Overall, Drury holds a 17-8 lead in the series.
 
Tech Tidbits
The Wonder Boys are off to an 0-3 start after a tough opening weekend conference crossover challenge against Emporia State and Fort Hays State and a defensive battle with UT Tyler this past week.
 
Statistically, the Wonder Boys are averaging 51.7 ppg and rank 12th in the GAC. On the defensive end of the court, the Wonder Boys rank first in the league in scoring defense, giving up an average of 60.3 ppg. In terms of field goal percentage and field goal percentage defense, the Wonder Boys are ninth in the conference as they shoot at an overall clip of .374 (61-of-163) and limited their opponents to a .394 mark (61-of-155) to rank fourth.
 
From beyond-the-arc, the Wonder Boys shoot at a clip of .240 (12-of-50) to rank 11th in the GAC while their opponents make three-pointers at a mark of .327 (18-of-55) to rank sixth. From the free throw line, the Wonder Boys shoot .636 as a team (21-of-33) to rank 11th.
 
Individually, the Wonder Boys have three players averaging double figures in scoring. Newcomers Wes Harris and Andre Leavell lead the way at 10.3 ppg each, respectively. Sophomore returner Taelon Peter rounds out double-figure scoring with a 10.0 ppg average.
 
The Wonder Boys are coached by Mark Downey, who is in his third season back on the sidelines at Tech after a 10-year hiatus. In his first stint, Downey patrolled the sidelines at Tech for four seasons from 2006-07 - 2009-10. In his final season, Downey guided the Wonder Boys to a program-record 30 wins and during that season, the Wonder Boys were ranked No. 1 in NCAA DII for the first time ever.
 
In his time at Tech, which is now in its seventh season overall, Downey has amassed an 94-75 record. Overall, Downey is in his 16th season as a head coach and has career record of 260-181.
 
Scouting the Cardinals
William Jewell is off to a 1-3 start to their season and have lost each of their last three games. Last season, the Cardinals were 15-15 overall and 9-10 in GLVC play. They did advance to the GLVC Tournament and played in the semifinals after winning their first two games.
 
Statistically, the Cardinals are averaging 68.0 ppg on offense to rank 11th in the GLVC and are giving up an average of 72.5 ppg to rank eighth in the GLVC. In terms of field goal percentages, William Jewell shoots at a .393 clip overall (95-of-242) to rank 13th in their league and allow opponents to shoot at a mark of .421 (99-of-235) to rank seventh.
 
From three-point range, the Cardinals shoot at a .314 clip (27-of-86) to rank 13th in the GLVC and allow opponents to shoot .367 (33-of-90) from range to rank 10th. At the charity stripe, the Cardinals shoot .679 (55-of-81) to rank 10th in the GLVC.
 
Individually, the Cardinals have three players scoring in double figures and are led by Jordan Jermain at 13.8 ppg. The two others in double figures are Mason Alexander and Heri Tshiyoyo at 12.8 and 10.0 ppg, respectively. Two other Cardinals are averaging at least 9.0 ppg.
 
The Cardinals are coached by Chris McCabe, who is in his fourth season at William Jewell. In his time as a head coach at William Jewell, McCabe has amassed a 31-52 record. Prior to coming to William Jewell, McCabe spent nine seasons as head coach at Liberty North High School in Liberty, Mo.
 
Scouting the Panthers
Drury is off to a 2-1 start to their season and will have played a game against Southwestern Oklahoma the day prior to taking on Tech. Last season, the Panthers were 10-16 overall and 7-10 in GLVC play. The did advance to the GLVC Tournament, but were quick exits with a blowout loss to Missouri-St. Louis in the first round.
 
Statistically, the Panthers are averaging 81.0 ppg on offense to rank fifth in the GLVC and are giving up an average of 74.7 ppg to rank 11th in the GLVC. In terms of field goal percentages, Drury shoots at a .485 clip overall (81-of-167) to rank fourth in their league and allow opponents to shoot at a mark of .548 (85-of-155) to rank 13th.
 
From three-point range, the Panthers shoot at a .403 clip (31-of-71) to rank third in the GLVC and allow opponents to shoot .389 (14-of-36) from range to rank 11th. At the charity stripe, the Panthers shoot .794 (50-of-63) to rank fourth in the GLVC.
 
Individually, the Panthers have three players scoring in double figures and are led by Riley Naeger a0t 13.7 ppg. The two others in double figures are Preston Cook and Adam Moore at 12.3 and 10.7 ppg, respectively. Three other Panthers are averaging at least 9.0 ppg.
 
The Panthers are coached by Chris Foster, who is in his second season at Drury. In his time as a head coach at Drury, Foster has amassed a 12-17 record. Prior to coming to Drury, Foster spent time as head coach at McKendree University (three seasons) and Truman State (four seasons). Overall, Foster has a career record of 129-97.
