RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – The Arkansas Tech men's basketball team is gearing up for their home-opener for the 2022-23 season on Thursday as they welcome in UT-Tyler.
 
The game is scheduled to tip-off at 7 p.m. and will be the first-ever meeting between the two teams.
 
Tech Tidbits
The Wonder Boys are off to an 0-2 start after a tough opening weekend conference crossover challenge against Emporia State and Fort Hays State.
 
Through those two games, the Wonder Boys are averaging 53.0 ppg on offense and are limiting their opponents to 62.5 ppg. In terms of field goal percentage, the Wonder Boys are shooting 39% overall on the young season (41-of-105) while their opponents are shooting 40% (41-of-102).
 
From beyond-the-arc, the Wonder Boys are shooting at a clip of .281 (9-of-32) while their opponents are making three-pointers at a mark of .258 (8-of-31). From the free throw line, the Wonder Boys are shooting .577 as a team (15-of-26).
 
Individually, the Wonder Boys have two players average double figures in scoring. Newcomers 
Andre Leavell and 
Wes Harris lead the way at 13.5 ppg and 10.0 ppg, respectively.
 
The Wonder Boys are coached by 
Mark Downey, who is in his third season back on the sidelines at Tech after a 10-year hiatus. In his first stint, Downey patrolled the sidelines at Tech for four seasons from 2006-07 - 2009-10. In his final season, Downey guided the Wonder Boys to a program-record 30 wins and during that season, the Wonder Boys were ranked No. 1 in NCAA DII for the first time ever.
 
In his time at Tech, which is now in its seventh season overall, Downey has amassed an 94-74 record. Overall, Downey is in his 16th season as a head coach and has career record of 260-180.
 
Scouting The Patriots
UT-Tyler is off to a 1-0 start to their season as they knocked off Louisiana Christian 86-73 on Monday at home. Last season, the Patriots were 16-10 overall and 7-8 in Lone Star Conference play. The did advance to the LSC Tournament but were one-and-done losing 66-62 to Midwestern State.
 
With only one game to their record this season, the Patriots do not have much in the way of statistical averages.
 
However, in their win, the Patriots scored 86 points and had three players score in double figures. 
Rashaun Williams led the way in scoring for UT-Tyler in that opener and scored 35 points on 13-of-19 shooting. He was 5-of-8 from three-point range and 4-of-4 from the charity stripe.
 
As a team, the Patriots shot over 56% from the field (32-of-57), 37% from three-point range (9-of-24) and 72% (13-of-18) from the free throw line.
 
Defensively, UT-Tyler allowed 73 points to Louisiana Christian. Statically, the Wildcats shot 44% (25-of-56) overall, 40% (6-of-15) from three-point range and 65% from the free throw line (17-of-26).
 
The Patriots are coached by 
Louis Wilson, who is in his fourth season at UT-Tyler. In his time as a head coach at UT-Tyler, Wilson has amassed a 37-39 record. Prior to his time at UT-Tyler, Wilson spent a year as the associate head coach at Grand Canyon University and was as an assistant coach at Utah State for three years before that. Prior to joining the staff at Utah State, Wilson spent five seasons as head coach at Adams State where he led the Grizzles to three NCAA Regional Tournament appearances. Overall, Wilson has a 132-85 record in nine seasons as a head coach.
