Adams notches career-high 24 points in defeat; Wonder Boys upended 67-62

MONTICELLO, Ark. – Arkansas Tech senior guard Ke'Lyn Adams turned in a career-effort on Saturday afternoon at Arkansas-Monticello as he scored a career-high 24 points against UAM. The best scoring output of Adams' Tech career would not be enough to propel the Wonder Boys to a victory, however, as they ultimately fell short to the Boll Weevils, 67-62.

For Adams, his prolific scoring afternoon got started right out of the gates as he scored the Wonder Boys' (5-5, 4-5 GAC) first six points of the game. He would go on to score six more points in the first half to give him 12 points for the opening 20 minutes of play.

With Adams getting heated up on offense, the Wonder Boys and Boll Weevils battled back and forth through the first half. All told, the score was tied up on four occasions and the lead changed hands three times. Additionally, the largest lead for either team was a mere six points, and that margin lasted all of nine seconds as Cejay Mann buried a three-pointer for the Wonder Boys right before the end of the first half.

In the second half, Adams started that 20 minutes much like he did the first 20 as he darted out to a personal 5-0 run thanks to a jumper and a three-pointer, all within the opening minute of action. That scoring burst by Adams knotted the score at 34-all with 19:08 left on the clock.

Just over a minute later, the Wonder Boys were back in the lead on a Kevin Howard layup at the 17:49 mark. The lead then changed hands twice over the next two minutes of play and it was a mid-range jumper by Adams at the 15:39 mark that swing the lead in favor of the Wonder Boys.

Tech remained in the lead over the next four minutes of game time, but were only able to build up a lead as large as five points. With the margin between the two teams at just a single point with 11:19 on the clock, the lead quickly changed hands twice with UAM grabbing the first lead and the Wonder Boys capturing the second lead seconds later with a Justin Briley layup on the other end.

The final lead change of the game would occur at the 10:26 mark on a UAM layup. That gave the Boll Weevils a 50-49 lead. It was also the spark of a 9-0 run by the Boll Weevils that pushed their lead to its largest of the game - eight points, 57-49, with an even seven minutes left to play.

The Wonder Boys would not go down without a fight as they ripped off a 6-0 run of their own to pull as close as two points, 57-55, with 4:43 left to play. A quick 5-0 burst by UAM pushed their lead back out seven points with 3:37 left.

Once more, the Wonder Boys would not let the game get away and responded in-kind with a 5-0 burst of their own to pull back to within two points, 62-60, this time with 2:43 left to play. That would be as close as the Wonder Boys would get, however, as UAM held on for a five-point win. 67-62.

Statistically, the Wonder Boys turned in one of their most-efficient games as they shot 51% overall from the floor (26-of-51). The 51% shooting effort was the third-highest this season for the Wonder Boys.

Individually, the Wonder Boys had eight players score, but Adams was the only one to reach double figures with his aforementioned 24 points. Adams would get to that career-high on the strength of 11-of-15 shooting overall from the floor. He also made one three-pointer and was 1-of-1 from the charity stripe. Additionally, Adams added a team-high seven rebounds.

Niko Gosnell and Kimani Binder were next in scoring behind Adams with eight points apiece.

The Wonder Boys will now shift their attention to a Monday night home game with Harding. Tip-off is scheduled for about 30 minutes following the conclusion of the women's game which is scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off inside Tucker Coliseum.
