RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – The Arkansas Tech men's basketball team snapped a two-game losing streak and did so through a balanced scoring effort on Monday night at home against Harding. All eight Wonder Boys that logged a minute in the game scored at least six points, and all but two of those players went for double figures as Tech beat Harding by a score of 89-76.
The six players in double figures for the Wonder Boys (6-5, 4-5 GAC) marked the first time this season that has happened. The last time that was achieved was last season in Tech's epic triple overtime game at home against Henderson State.
In the game with Harding on Monday, the Wonder Boys found themselves trailing by a manageable margin through the first four and a half minutes of action. At the 15:24 mark, the Bisons (3-6, 3-6 GAC) hit a three-pointer to take their largest lead to that point, six points. On the ensuing Tech possession, redshirt freshman
BJ Johnson buried his first collegiate three-pointer to trim the deficit in half.
That trifecta went on to spark a 13-0 run by the Wonder Boys over the next two minutes of action. At the completion of the run, the Wonder Boys went from being down six to up seven points, 19-12, with 12:16 left in the first half.
The Wonder Boys would remain out in front the remainder of the opening half and held a lead as large as 12 points at the 5:02 mark before hitting the locker room with a nine-point lead, 41-32.
Out of the break, Harding began a furious comeback effort and closed to within a point, 45-44, at the 16:53 mark. The Wonder Boys were able to stem that initial tide on their next trip down the floor thanks to a
Ke'Lyn Adams three-pointer.
About two minutes of game time later, however, the Bisons finally reclaimed their first lead since early in the first half. In gaining that lead, the Bisons went on a 6-0 scoring burst and extended it out to an 8-0 run before the Wonder Boys broke the momentum on a
Kimani Binder three-pointer.
The Binder three-ball brought the Wonder Boys to within a point, 52-51, with 13:41 to play. Over the next six or so minutes of game action, the lead changed hands five times. The last of those went in favor of the Wonder Boys and came at the 7:56 mark on a conventional three-point play by
Niko Gosnell.
The Wonder Boys would take off from there, swelling their lead out as large as 15 points with 31 seconds left before ending with a 13-point margin of victory.
In addition to the balanced scoring, the Wonder Boys were highly-efficient in that scoring as a team. In fact, the Wonder Boys shot a season-high 59% overall from the floor (34-of-58) and were 44% successful from three-point range (10-of-23). The Wonder Boys also shot 73% from the free throw line (11-of-15).
The leading scorer for the Wonder Boys was Binder as he scored a season-high 15 points off the bench. Adams was next with 14 points followed by
Cejay Mann with 13.
Kevin Howard scored a season-high 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting.
Justin Briley added 11 points off the bench as well and Johnson rounded out double-figure scoring with an even 10 points, a season-high.
The Wonder Boys will now prepare for a road trip to Arkadelphia where they are set to take on Ouachita for the first time this season. The previous two scheduled games with the Tigers had been canceled due to COVID-19 protocols. Tip-off for the game with Ouachita is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
