Balanced offense gives Golden Suns the edge over Southern Arkansas

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – The Arkansas Tech Golden Suns picked up their 10th straight win of the season over Southern Arkansas, 90-82. The Golden Suns now sit at 10-0 for the first time since the 2009-10 season! Ashlei Lopez and Jalei Oglesby led the Golden Suns with 19 and 18 points respectively.

Southern Arkansas was the first on the board within the first 30 seconds of the game before the Golden Suns went on a 9-2 run to go up 9-4 with 7:52 left in the quarter. The Golden Suns led by as many as seven, 15-8 before the Lady Muleriders stormed back, taking a three-point lead, 21-18 with 1:48 to go. A jumper from Nikki Metcalfe tied things up 24-24 at the end of the first.

The second quarter went back and forth, with the teams trading points until Southern Arkansas went up four, 36-32 with 5:51 left in the first half. Neither team scored for the next two minutes until free throws from Sydnee Wynn pulled the Golden Suns within two 36-34 and a quick layup from Oglesby tied things at 36-36 with 3:16 left. Arkansas Tech used a 6-2 run to finish the half, up 46-42.

Arkansas Tech extended its lead to six, 50-44 in the first three minutes of the third quarter. Offense continued to flow for the Golden Suns as they grabbed their largest lead of 14, 68-54, after a jumper from Wynn with 1:42 left in the quarter. Oglesby capped off the quarter with a last second shot for the Golden Suns to go up 72-61 going into the final quarter of play.

The Lady Muleriders did not give up, pulling within four, 72-68 with 8:09 left in the game. A jumper from Metcalfe put the Golden Suns back up eight, 76-68 before Southern Arkansas pulled within two, 78-76 with five minutes remaining. Jayana Sanders all but sealed the deal with a three-pointer with 1:11 to go. Free throws from Southern Arkansas were the last points on the board. The Golden Suns picked up their tenth-straight victory, 90-82.

The Golden Suns shot a blistering 53.8 percent from the field, going 42-of-78. Kaley Shipman and Sanders added 11 points apiece and Metcalfe rounded out the double-figure scoring with 10. Sanders dished out six assists and Lopez grabbed six steals in the win.
