ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – In their last regular season matchup against Henderson State, the Golden Suns could not manage to find a way to overtake the Reddies, falling for the first time this season, 90-86. Despite the loss, and with the rest of the results from Saturday's action, the Golden Suns clinch the No. 1 seed in the Eastern division leading into the Great American Conference Championships
The Reddies opened the game with a three-pointer before the teams started trading points in the first quarter. The Golden Suns took their first lead 11-9 after a layup from
Ashlei Lopez. Things were tied at 13-13 before a layup from Oglesby gave the Arkansas Tech its largest lead of four, 17-13 with 2:44 left in the quarter. The Reddies tied things up in the last 30 seconds at 20-20 to end the first quarter.
In the second quarter, the teams went back and forth again, with neither team leading by more than four for almost the entire quarter until t. The Reddies tied things at 34-34 with 4:33 left in the first half of play. Henderson State picked up leads of two and four points before a layup from
Jayana Sanders gave the Golden Suns their final points of the first half. The Golden Suns entered halftime, down five, 47-42.
Arkansas Tech opened the second half scoring the opening basket off a jumper from
Hannah Villines and pulled within three, 49-46 with 7:22 left in the third. Henderson State pushed their lead to 11, 59-48 with 5:31 left in the quarter. The Golden Suns answered back, pulling withing four again, 64-60 before the Reddies scored the last basket of the quarter and took a six-point lead going into the final quarter of play, 66-60.
Entering the final quarter of play, the Reddies maintained a lead of six to eight in the opening four minutes of play. The Golden Suns once again, pulled within four, 73-69 after a layup from Oglesby with 5:36 to go. With 3:36 remaining, Henderson State grabbed a nine-point lead, 81-72. A three-pointer from
Kaley Shipman got the Golden Suns within four with 35 second left. Arkansas Tech fouled in the final seconds to stop the clock, but Henderson State kept composure, making free throws late to take the game, 90-86.
Lopez led the team for the fourth straight game with 17 points, followed closely by Shipman and Oglesby with 15 apiece. Sanders and Villines closed out the double-figure scoring with 11 each. The Golden Suns shot 48.6 from the field and grabbed 42 points in the paint.
