SHIPMAN, SANDERS TURN IN CAREER NIGHTS IN WIN OVER OKLAHOMA BAPTIST

SHAWNEE, Okla. Kaley Shipman turned in a career-high 26-point, seven-rebound performance, leading a cast of four Arkansas Tech players to reach double figures, while Jayana Sanders dished out a career-high 11 assists as the Golden Suns basketball team (8-4, 5-3 Great American Conference) picked up a 91-64 win over Oklahoma Baptist (5-10, 0-8) on Saturday.

  • The Golden Suns are back in action on Thursday, Jan. 16, facing Harding in a 5:30 p.m. matchup at Tucker Coliseum.  
 HOW IT HAPPENED 
  • The Bison controlled the opening minutes, claiming a 7-2 advantage just over two minutes into the game. 
  • Tech used a 7-0 run to claim a 9-7 lead at the 5:43 mark of the opening quarter, and the teams traded baskets, with OBU tying the game at 11-11 with 3:41 remaining in the quarter. 
  • The Golden Suns were red-hot down the stretch, closing the quarter on a 9-0 run to claim a 20-11 lead after one quarter of play.
  • After Tech scored the first four points of the second quarter, OBU used an 8-0 run to pull back to within five (24-19) with 5:13 to play in the half. 
  • The Golden Suns went on a streak, scoring 11 consecutive points and 19 of the next 23 to take a 20-point (43-23) halftime lead. 
  • The third quarter belonged to the Golden Suns, who outscored the Bison 31-17 in the third quarter to take a commanding 34-point (74-40) lead going into the fourth quarter. 
  • OBU cut slightly into the Tech advantage in the fourth quarter but the Golden Suns were able to hold on for the 91-64 victory.   
NOTABLES
  • Sanders' game represented her second career game of 10 or more assists. The previous time she reached the mark she dished out 10 assists against Oklahoma Baptist in Shawnee during the 2018-19 season.  
  • Sarah Heard narrowly missed a double-double with 15 points and nine rebounds, Ke'Vonshaye Stackhouse scored 14 points with three boards, and Lycia Peevy scored 10 points off the bench. 
  • Sanders narrowly missed a triple double, adding eight points and six rebounds in the win. 
  • Tech outshot OBU 51.5 to 34.4 percent from the floor.
  • The Golden Suns grabbed 47 rebounds to OBU's 28. 
  • Tech held a 23-13 advantage in points off turnovers, a 21-17 edge in bench points, a 42-22 advantage in points in the paint, a 20-11 edge in fast-break points, and a 12-6 advantage in second-chance points.
