Week Four Game Notes - Baseball Edition
RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. Â - The inclement weather currently in the Arkansas River Valley isn't the only storm visiting town this weekend.Â
The Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys football team (1-2, 1-2 Great American Conference) will go for its second win in a row on Saturday, hosting Southern Nazarene (1-2, 1-2) in a 6 p.m. Family Day tilt from Thone Stadium at Buerkle Field.
Live video and statistics are available at www.arkansastechsports.com.Â
The heavy rain has forced the cancellation of pre-game festivities, including the Party at the Plaza, but the schedule of the game itself is unaffected.Â
Arkansas Tech is 5-0 in its all-time series with Southern Nazarene, and over the last two seasons have outscored the Crimson Storm 98-0. While the series has been heavily skewed in favor of the Wonder Boys, it has not been without its iconic moments.Â
Last season,
Braden Stringer turned in the longest punt return in school history - a 93-yard return - against the Crimson Storm in Bethany. Two years prior to that in Bethany, Arkansas Tech sent ten men on the field for the opening play from scrimmage in honor of late Wonder Boys defensive lineman
Zemaric Holt and took advantage of a turnover to score a short-handed touchdown.Â
That history in the all-time series will mean very little when the two teams take to the gridiron on Saturday
Both teams sit in a 1-2 logjam - as do eight teams in all in the GAC this year. Only Southern Arkansas and Ouachita remain perfect at 3-0, while Harding and Oklahoma Baptist both sport 2-1 records. The Wonder Boys handed the Oklahoma Baptist version of the Bison a 31-7 setback last week in Shawnee for OBU's first loss of the season.Â
Southern Nazarene has been blanked twice in its two losses this year - a 35-0 season-opening setback at Southeastern Oklahoma and a 42-0 loss to Harding last week. However, SNU found the win column with a solid week two performance in Bethany against East Central, winning 45-20.
